Good coaching tips the scales.....

There seems to be a reoccurring theme here...Fran is no more than a mid major coach and JBO is not much of a point guard. Like many silly statements, if you say it often enough, maybe someone will start to believe it. In the meantime, those silly comments get you some attention. Sounds a bit like national politics.

On this whole coaching issue I continue to feel conflicted about Fran but agree with the sentiment that it has become time to put up or shut up. I read a summation of the Indiana-Wisconsin game as I didn't watch and Indiana's shooting percentage dropped to just 41% with Nigel Hayes saying that while they played well at both ends he thought they could have played better defensively. Sure Indiana had a hot night shooting against us but how much of that can you attribute to our poor defense? Fran's teams have never played all that good of defense in the half court and we played some lazy defense in transition. When you give up 95 you haven't played a stellar game defensively.

In the big picture18 wins and an NIT bid pretty much meets expectations for this season. But the rubber meets the road at tournament time in March and we reverted back to more of the team we looked like in November. This has become a repeated theme with Fran and I don't know if we will get past it or not.

Just saw Iowa Hoops tweet out yesterday that Fran is first coach to lead Iowa to 18+win seasons 6 straight years.
Yet we see all of these posts wanting to fire him. He had to build the program from nothing. Absolutely nothing. 3 years from now, if we are still a bubble team, I'll be with ya'll. But for now, let's support Fran and the team and hope for a bright future.

So, consistently good...but never great. 18 win season in bball is about like 7-5 in football. Sound familiar?
iowa has never been a great program. That's why it says,

Fran is the FIRST coach in IOWA HISTORY to lead a team to 18+ wins in six straight seasons.

Consistently good is not a bad thing.

Consistently bad is a bad thing. Lich.

Inconsistently good and bad and never great is not a good thing. Alf.

And I'm sure that when Alf claimed his BTT titles the same Fran-haters didn't give Alf any clearance for those. Probably more like can't win the regular season & not able to take up residence at Sweet 16.

The last coach that had Iowa in 3of4 NCAA tournaments got fired the last time Iowa was in the Sweet 16 --

18 years ago. So yeah, consistently good is good in my book and Fran has some more time with me because I'm old enough to remember how stupid it was then to fire Davis.

By the way, Fran's record at Iowa in the BTT is the same playoff record as the Cowboys for the last 20 years. But they're back.

--------The OP needs to get his his head out of his butt, you don't beat teams when they shoot 60% from the field.

The reason they got 60%, was because 1/3 of those made field goals were easy drives to the basket.

90% of the time. I was 100% certain that Wiscy would beat Indiana today, making out situation look even worse. We have a mid-major dud at HC, who has not ONCE in seven (7) years been able to maintain momentum and see it eventually pay off. I don't give a rats ass if we had 5 Frosh on the floor last nite....that display was embarrassing and unforgivable given what was on the line. I thought it was hilarious how many thought Indiana could actually win the tournament. Much like Fran, you are what your record says you are....Indiana was 8-10, and still drilled our sorry ass.

Did Fran or one of his family pi$$ in your cornflakes?

No, but chew on this.....the South Dakota State Jackrabbits are going to the dance for the 4th time in 6 years. WoW,,,,I mean, WoW.....our bar has been lowered sooooooo far by some of you. You do remember why Barney Rubble was run off, right? That was back when our bar wasn't on the ground, like it is now.

What does a team getting auto bids from a crappy conference have to do with us? Or are you just saying Fran has two more years to match that?

Whelp...I guess South Dakota State is just better than Iowa.

So Playmaker, it sounds like you have all the answers. Let's make you the AD for a day, what is your plan for Fran? Are you firing him since he didn't reach 4 NCAA tournaments in the past 6 years?

Or he could just wait until next year when he gets to 4 in the last 5 years.

I just think that his record in the Big 10 Tourney speaks volumes about HIS ability, and the ability to keep the team focused and ready when they are on a big stage....they piss the bed in most early season tournaments as well and exit early. There is a direct correlation to this, and me stating that seven (7) years is more than enough. People choose to bury their head in the sand over what ISU does every F'n year...with different coaches every 3-4 years....they shouldn't. Their program is better than ours....period!!! NO WAY they would have given Fran as much rope as he has gotten with us. Reason? Because they have experienced way more success than we have, and have not allowed their bar to be lowered, as we have. We are ALWAYS to scared of change, because we know how much rope we do give coaches. INHERENT FLAW in thinking.....LOSER mentality, So we bear ISU this year,,,,big deal...think they really care right now? Nope.

So ISU does it with different coaches? Isn't that proof that going on a run in a tournament isn't because of the coaches? When Recker drilled two game winners in a row, it sure made Alford look like a good Big 10 Tournament coach. Of course when the players pissed away a 20 point lead and lost on a last second shot, Alford looked like a terrible NCAA tournament coach.

Wow...it's attitudes like this that got us into the Lickliter years. Tom Davis always had us in the NCAA tournament, never lost in the first round, he wasn't good enough for fans like this so he was let go. Brought in a big name Steve Alford who let Iowa to 3 NCAA tournaments and 3 NIT bids in 8 years, he wasn't good enough so he bailed out. Brought in Todd Lickliter who absolutely destroyed the basketball program, down to the point we were losing scholarship players. See the pattern?

Now we got a coach who resurrected the basketball program from the dead, got good talent to start coming here again, get's Iowa back to the post season in his 2nd year and the NCAA Tournament in 3 of the last 4 years and a few idiots on here who think the grass is greener on the other side want to run him out of town. Anybody with a brain could see the inexperienced talent this team has, and another solid recruiting class has more coming in. All the experts like Iowa's future, Iowa is in position to be good for a long time.

So the bottom line is the only people that have their heads buried in the sand are the ones that think this program is not heading in the right direction. The ones that look at a low major like South Dakota State, who managed to win a horrible conference tournament playing an hour from their campus, or Iowa State who has also had their fair share of adversity. Firing Fran right now would be stupid!

I agree with ya. There are so many morons on this board that are complete idiots or who just argue for the sake of it.
