Baer Anomaly

A quick run through the Big-Ten individual stats finds Nick Baer as the only player in the conference who has more points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks than he does have turnovers. Pretty rare company... Plus, it doesn't even account for all of the "helping" and "hustle" and "leadership" and "spark" and "stability" he brings to the games...

MVP

He's shooting 45% in these last 4 games behind the arc and is looking more aggressive than ever in taking 3 point attempts. Stay hot kid!

Excellent timing and knowledge of the angles are outstanding. NIcholas knows where the ball will bounce after a shot. leading to so many offensive rebounds and putbacks. Also is quite handy with blocking shots, coming from behind after the opponent goes up to shoot. Here comes Nick, Swat.....!

Here is an In-Your-Face-Disgrace move by Baer. My very favorite Hawkeye among many this season.....

Nick does an old school move after he shoots the ball...he actually follows his shot.
Sad to think a basic, fundamental basketball play is now considered "old school". The shooter knows better than anyone if his shot is off or not, particularly a shot that's short, chances are it will be coming back at him. Baer made a sound play, one I'd like to see all of the Hawkeyes make more.

One wonders why the basics aren't standard practice in this level of BB

Follow your shot

When the ball is in the air, identify someone to block out, don't look at the ball first

Blocking out is more important than jumping

Pivot the correct way on a pick and roll and you will be open

Don't leave the man with the ball alone

Keep one eye on the ball and the other eye on your man

Help out and drop off your man a bit when the ball is on the other side of the court

Practice free throws religiously

Help your best shooters to get the most shots

Work to get good shots and take them, they don't all go in...its ok if you miss

If you are a bit tired, rest on the offensive end

Don't reach or slap at the ball

To name a few...

All those things you listed were fundamentals that I harped on when I coached HS ball. The one above drives me crazy today. I want to call Fran's call in show and ask if this is not taught anymore, because almost no one does it right. Not just Iowa players. Nobody.

Good list!

Pretty impressive for a guy who took 1, that's right ONE, 3 point attempt in high school... and it was an end of quarter heave.
Whaaaaa ..... ?
That can't be true ....

A *like* to all these posts

And...don't complain or bitch to the refs...be polite... It is a sign of maturity, and you will be treated better by the refs.

And how about his sister going to the coaching staff with his highlight tape to get them to look at him? He was just like most Iowa kids that wanted absolutely nothing more then to be able to put that jersey on. But he wouldn't go tooting his own horn so his sister knowing that decided to do what she could. Now granted I wonder if he hadn't played against his kid shortly after that if he'd have ended up on their radar or not. Great great story regardless. I'm glad he didn't have to wait too long to get a scholarship. There's just not a more deserving player out there.

When he rebounded his miss against MD with about 5 mins to go and put it back that was ball game. That was the nail in the coffin of that game. They were done after that.

RevKev .. Great list. I'm not sure if it's coaches getting lazy or the kids watching too much ESPN, seeing the "highlights", believing that's what a good player does, and believing that's the way to get noticed.

Baer is playing the game right. Someone needs to make a highlight video of all his hustle plays and distribute it to high school kids saying, "This is what hustle and hard work gets you .. .. noticed by coaches and the national media."

Just my $.02 .. .. GO HAWKS!!!
