NJ WR Frank Darby

Contacted his high school coach, who told me that Iowa again is involved with its former commitment. Working to gather more details.

Looks like Iowa wasn't the only one concerned with the academics and thinking prep school was the right route for this kid. My money is on him hitting prep school for a year then red-shirting.

Didn't see that coming... I figured he was a shoe in to go to Rutgers. Are their entrance requirements even harder then Iowas? Oh well I think he'll be a heck of a player so if both sides are on same page and good to go then come on. I hope he does well at prep school and hits the ground running the next yr.

I thought the Darby was on Sunday.

I don't think a kid can sign a LOI and then go to prep school. So, if other schools were telling Darby they want him to go to prep school and if Iowa still wants him to go to prep school, then, unless I am wrong, Darby and Iowa wouldn't be talking.

WR is a position we need to take some leaps on. Good recruits are not coming here to average 3 catches a game.
We've had Wrs put up decent stats before. Look back at what DJK and McNutt did together. I always looked back at that time with those two with K Davis and Brandon Myers and Moeaki (although he was hurt a lot) & TE as having a passing game that did well but yet really under achieved. Was that Stanzi? Play calling? Combination? I know that was the KOK days and not Davis but anyways I'm rambling but I think if a really good WR were to develop I'd hope he'd get used enough maybe Jay Scheel can be that guy who knows.

I think you mean a shoo-in

The fact we are engaged once again to me indicates the type of talent this young man has. I was last year if we didn't sign him and he went JC we would never sign him because the big boys would get involved with him.

just read wadley article that rob put out and connect the dots with darby (from jersey city, right next to hell...i mean, newark) - i'm guessing his transcripts cry for help and iowa is trying to do what is best for this young man.

If his academics are suspect a year at prep school would obviously be the best thing for his future, but I would bet he's simply getting some bad advice from somewhere. Most likely his friends and family. Whatever he does, hopefully it works out for him since if he followed the advice of the Iowa staff, his future would most likely be brighter.

Yes, Rutgers' entrance requirements are harder than Iowa's. Within the world of the B1G (including RU and Maryland), Iowa's entrance requirements for undergrad rank in the bottom quarter.

Undoubtedly true, as it pertains to the general student body. Do things change for a highly-recruited athlete (genuinely curious, I do not know)? I get the sense that all schools accept athletes in all sports who would never be accepted on their academic merit alone.

Do schools have the ability to "bend" their acceptance criteria for athletes, and if so, do some schools do more "bending" than others? If anyone has any insight I would love to hear it.

Don't schools have "reserved" spots for athletes who probably wouldn't be admitted otherwise, but who meet the minimum requirement and are given preferential admission? I suspect that the "minimum" gets bent pretty low sometimes.
