A Jackson

Time for me to eat some crow, didn't think he would sign....Congrats young man, damn glad to have ya, lotta great upside to this kid and the whole class, pumped beyond words....

they offered. jackson said no. michigan played the whole 'backed off' as 'damage control' for perception.

I know I'll get blasted for this but I don't believe that was the case. Why would Michigan pull a much better offensive tackles offer (Swenson)? I hear all these people say Alarics ceiling is higher I'm sorry but stars are what matter.

this can't be a serious post, are you trolling?

Getting the better player is what matters and only Michigan would know who they had higher on their board.

Yea he's gotta be joking. Stars do matter big time and since I don't know any inside info on players, I would always want the player with more stars. But if the coach decides he wants a 3 star over a 4 star that he has the opportunity to sign, I can pretty much guarantee the 3 star is better. Kinda like the 4 star linemen we didn't even offer. Kirk obviously thinks the low 3 stars we signed are better.

Would you rather have a kid who's ceiling is higher or more stars off a subjective star rating that's given by someone who's quite possibly seen less of the kid play than some of us on you tube? The stars are about pointless. To me it's about who all has offered a kid. If your a 3 or 4 star kid yet only have a small amount of offers with few power 5s it makes me wonder what's up with him. I think Brandon Myers was a 3 star yet was going to UNI till Iowa offered on signing day. So why wouldn't a 3 star kid have more offers? So again stars are beyond irrelevant. It's how the kid projects 2 yrs plus down the road and how they fit on the team. It's an inexact science to be sure but I'm glad Iowas coaches don't look at it the way this Kenny guy evidently does...

do people really think that Michigan offered, and then two days later 'backed off', or thought, hey, we made a mistake on offering this kid. do you think that if Jackson would have committed to Michigan the day they offered that they'd have cut ties with him a couple days later? come on man!

If you're a 5 star you're all but a lock to be a stud (cue Dan Doring comments). Most 4 stars end up being really good. After that, stars don't really matter that much because once you get past the top 100 players or so it's a cap shoot. It's pretty obvious when you think about it. It's just impossible to properly evaluate the thousands and thousands of players there are. It's not impossible for a coach to find a kid at a small school and properly evaluate him himself tho. If Ferentz finds a kid like that he stays a 2 star. If Sabin finds that same kid he's instantly a 4 star. That's when stars don't matter.

Brandon Myers was 2* per rivals - class of 2004. classic under the radar kid - hell of an athlete - iowa didn't offer until last day to keep their secret hidden from others.....

of course coaches don't look at 'stars'......they probably can evaluate a kid......if they've made it this far in coaching.....

Well now that you mention it, yea I could see Harbaugh doing that. :)

I'd say this...i'm not about to tell elvis how to thrust his pelvis...tell Mozart how to write a symphony...or tell the ferentz family how to recruit or develop o linemen.....stars be damned...welcome aboard 3 star future all americans!

And Myers is a perfect example of why I dont get all worked up about recruiting. Many of the 2 and 3 * kids Iowa gets turn out to be very good football players.

Four * players can get hurt or disenchanted, who knows. Once they sign and are in the fold by making it into school academically then I like to see more about them.

There are a few high school videos I watch when someone posts them.
