Forum article on hawks chances of winning Nat title game

The poll they showed had Iowa at 1 in 33 chance but I would put them at .5 %. You have to be 12-0 or no worse than 10-2 with a tough schedule. It is hard for the hawks to get to that record. I hope they do it again but the hawks deficit in team speed means they would have to be in perfect position on every play to beat a bama , osu or clemson.

Very low odds.

Win as many games as possible
Win big 10 west
Win big champ game
get into final 4

There's probably 10-12 teams with a legit shot at it. I'd say we are at the lower end of that group. But yes Iowa has to have no more then 1 loss and win BIG 10 title game to get in final 4. From there anything can happen.

How 'bout the Hawks win a bowl game once before even thinking they might be playoff worthy? Nothing but a string of embarrassments the past four years.

I like our chances of getting to the playoffs if Ott comes back and can play at full speed. The Big games are at home and we most of our team coming back. We should win the West and we were only a fluke play (football sitting there nicely on another players shoulder pad for an interception) away from beating MSU. We should have at the very least had a field goal there but a touch down would have been devastating to MSU. A huge MSU fan told me that MSU does not play very well when they are behind by more than one score.

If Iowa is good enough to beat a good program in the East, who is having a good year, then, at that point I would be optimistic. Did you know that since the Hayden Fry era, Iowa never beat Ohio State and got to the Rose Bowl in the same year ?

The eye test is obvious. But if one never watches other teams play you that person just does not know any better. Iowa does not have the talent or the depth to compete and win at the highest levels. Ya, they can be a tough out on a given day, but they don't have what it takes. Until and unless there is a a watershed change in recruiting I don't expect much.

Define "not expecting much". If you mean not expecting winning national championships, then I would agree, as in the modern age, any team who does not perennially recruit in the top 10-15 year in and out, are all in the same boat, in that NC are not realistic. Neither winning them or playing for them

If you mean not expecting to regularly winning the B1G(and thus, not making the CFP), I would also agree. Although we were a mere play away (sigh) last year, albeit, with a favorable schedule.

Recruiting(and what I really mean is talent/depth) needs to continue to improve. That said, sustained top 15 classes would be next to impossible in the modern environment. Top 25-35 ranked classes, somewhat consistently, should be attainable, with an occaisional top 20 class. I will continue to believe development will have to be the primary way to narrow the gap.

Next year, I expect to be in the hunt for a B1G West title going into the middle of November.

Last year, I expected 7-8 wins.
