Last night's game......

Was a typical game Iowa would lose in the past, maybe even this year. On the road, started out sluggish, got down by 12. Newbill and Garner going off from behind the line. But somehow they found a way to win. Very gutsy. I thought Fran played way too much zone. I was yelling at the TV to go to man, but the problem there was that Newbill would just drive to the rim. And then I figured Iowa would lose on a last second shot. How many times have we seen that? On paper, Iowa should have beaten PSU, but I was not feeling it most of the game. When Iowa went up 7 late in the second half I started to feel good, but PSU stormed right back. I am very happy to get out of there with a win. A loss would have been disastrous.

As the announcers said, many times, during last night's game, IOWA had a terrific
February and if they could somehow secure another road win, they may get a DOUBLE Bye in
Chicago.

A herculean performance by Aaron White, plus some smart play by Mike Gesell, J Uthoff,
Gabe Olaseni and Josh Ogelsby GOT IT DONE. Congrats to Coach Fran and his Hawkeyes.

Honestly I'm not surprised how well State played us not because they are better but because it seemed like they hit 2232255 threes!

In the past, this team was not one that could fight it's way back into a game when they were down. They didn't have a leader, they were not a threat from the 3pt line, and they were mentally weak.

Aaron White has realized that this is it. Senior season. He has become more vocal on the floor. And now has the physical skills to back it up.

Josh Oglesby doesn't go into a shell when he misses a shot, and doesn't stop to calculate the odds in his head before he shoots.

In fact, the whole team has stopped pouting when they get down. They are much more aggressive especially on defense.

Way to go Hawkeyes and way to go Fran and coaching staff. This is fun basketball to watch!

These last two game are very encouraging. Both games the other team shot stupid long 3s that went in. The games where Iowa has, many times, in the past given up on defense and imploded. Both games Jok and Woody played poorly and Uthoff had issues getting the pumpkin in the basket. The whole team stepped up big and came out with a W. Gesell has been constant. Sapp and JO have played some of their better games of the year. And White hasn't disappeared when they needed him.

Confidence is contagious and all 9 guys trust each other to make the necessary plays to get the win IMO. Team chemistry is there and is something Fran takes very seriously.
