Jaren Sina leaving Seton Hall

With Dickerson gone a transfer makes tons of sense, can sit out next year and step in knowing the system.

And as much as I like someone like Austin Pope (Juco), Sina would have 2 yrs to play after Gessell and Clemmons graduate vs 1 for any juco PG.

I like this better than a freshman. He averaged 26 minutes a game as a freshman and 32 minutes per game this year as a sophomore. He sits next year then is the starter when Gesell and Clemmons are gone...with a ton of starting experience under his belt and a year of adjusting to our style of play. Connor McCaffery can then back him up his senior year.

If we had a stud recruiter, I would say send him out there and lay out all the stops. This would be a HUGE get. Unfortunately, this staff has had zero success with top 150 players from outside of Iowa in 5 yrs. Fingers crossed.

Interesting. Looks like he'd be a good kid to catch.... So long as he worries more about winning lets get him before Hoiberg. He can't get em all geez.

In terms of PT... I'm not sure another team can offer a better scenario for the young man. Based on this alone it seems like a good match.

I admittedly know nothing about the kid...never heard of him until this post and have never seen him play that I can remember. That being said:

His size is basically similar to Mike Gesell. 6'1" 185 pounds roughly.

As far as stats, Gesell has a 3.7:1.9 assist to turnover ratio and Sina has a 2.3:1.4. So Gesell turns it over a little more (.5 per game) but makes up for it with almost 1.5 more assists per game. Sina also averaged 7 more minutes per game than Gesell.

Sina shoots a TON of 3's. In fact, Sina would be leading Iowa in 3 point attempts right now. Sina shot more 3's already this year (125) than Gesell has in any full season. 125 3's this year is also 45 more than Jok has attempted this year and 11 more than Uthoff. Percentage wise, Sina shot 38% from 3 last year and 32% this year. Obviously 32% is not a good number considering how many 3's he is launching.

I think the most alarming thing to me is that he has 125 3-point attempts on the year and only 158 total shots on the year. That means he only took 33 non-3 point shots the entire season. To put that in perspective, Gesell has taken 131 shots from inside 3-point range, Uthoff 162, Jok 100. So this kid seems like he just sits back and launches 3's all day and does little else as far as scoring offensively

Again I've never seen him play so I don't know his game at all but those are the stats that stood out to me. He doesn't seem like a true point guard in the sense of how Iowa runs their offense. It also has to be taken into consideration the differences in conferences. The Big East is a good conference and are projected to have 6 NCAA qualifiers. Seton Hall's SoS is currently 35 so its not like they have played a bunch of chumps

Thirty-two minutes average per game with seven point average doesn't look all that impressive to me. Does anyone know his assist to turnover ration? If that is really good then that's one thing but if that is poor then what is there to get excited about? Averaging seven points a game could mean twelve points one game and two points the next. It would also be more impressive if he was only averaging fifteen minutes a game instead of thirty-two. That's a lot of minutes for only seven points. If he has a lot of assist then that a difference maker as that would show he is unselfish and gets the ball to his team mates.

Thanks for the info, mopkins. That is really alarming. A true point guard doesn't have 125 of his 158 field goal attempts be 3 point attempts. I'd much rather have a point guard that can't score much, but is a great passer, and athletic enough to make plays.

Yeah his stat line is pretty confusing for being deemed a point guard. 32 minutes a game but has very few assists (55), very few steals (10), very few personal fouls (27), no blocked shots and not many (60) rebounds (Gesell has 56 in 100 less minutes). I'm not intentionally dumping on the kid at all but what in the hell is he doing the whole time?

Seems like on offense he launches 3's and on defense he does.......I have no idea? Few personal fouls and very few steals tells me he either isn't very active on defense or just plays his man so well straight up that he doesn't need to do anything else. Or else they just sit back in a zone the whole time like Syracuse?

I'm with you on this. We can do better. We need pg's that can get to the rim and finish. This kid is a 3 pnt shooter.

I think we're still in on K.J. Santos. Check him out starting at the 2:33 mark. I'd take this kid and/or Moore out of Chi-town. Or even Pope.

Yeah Santos looks like he could become a stud...6'7" with those moves? Yikes

I think the thing with Sina or another transfer/Juco is that in 2016 Sina would be a Junior. So there's an extra upper classmen. Right now in 2016 your upper classmen are Jok and Uhl. That's it. Kinda scary if you think about it

a HUGE get, huh?

Wasn't gesell a top 150 recruit outside of iowa? He hasn't been a top 150 player yet. So I don't know how HUGE it really would be. Looks like he shoots the 3 at same clip as Gesell.

From reading the linked article it sounds like he's playing on a selfish team with a lot of issues in the locker room. He's wanting out of that environment. A change of scenery may be just what he needs.

I'm not too worried about his shooting percentage from 3. He shot 38% last year and is shooting 32% this year. Most people think of 33% as being the same as 50% from 2 which is a good percentage. He shot 76.9% from the line last year and is shooting 79.4% from the line this year. So he can make free throws if the ball is in his hands at the end of the game.

Any JUCO we bring in is an unknown at the D-1 level. See Dickerson. Any freshman we bring in is an unknown entity at the D-1 level. This kid has played a ton of minutes in a good conference over the course of 2 seasons. There has to be a ton of game film on him.

Fran can look into his background. Is he part of the problem at Seton Hall? Fran can see how he looks in game situations. And ultimately Fran can decide if he's interested. I don't know any more about the kid than anyone else in this thread. But if Fran wants him I'm all about getting him. You can't coach D-1 game situation experience.

I get what you mean, but I don't think Sina looks to be an upgrade from what we have right now. He's a better shooter than MG but not as good a scorer and less athletic; he looks stiff. MG is very athletic but just doesn't have lateral quicks. Straightline, MG is as fast with the ball as anyone in the B1G.

Regarding the recruiting classes, if you've signed the right guys, it's a good way to build a team with high quality depth for a 2 year run. Sure you can nose-dive after that, but you've always have potential for a big class a year later and one after that. I like what Fran does with these big classes.

He made the announcement a week or so ago. Since then, Iowa has shown interest.

He was a rivals Top 150 recruit and is a PG.

Seems like that team has a lot of internal problems. Not of Sina's making according to the article, but a starting PG averaging 7PPG & 2.6APG..............I'm hoping we can do a little better than that in the assist department. Don't get me wrong, he seems ok, but I'd keep looking.

MG is at 7.3 & 3.7 BTW
