Williams chooses New Mexico over Iowa









Damn is right. The kids HS coach has ties to Iowa and seemed to have nothing but good things to say. Wonder the whys that went into that decision.
 






Iowa struggles to attract out of state black prep players, and transfers. Puzzling, but true. Atwood, Huff, Williams, ect....just do not connect with these kids. Lucky that Dickerson had a previous relationship with Francis and Peter Jok.
 


This one was a real head scratcher to me. When he cancelled his visit to Wisconsin while touring IC, I figured he liked what he was seeing and found a home. Proximity to hometown Chicago, Big Ten Conference, BTN, good academics, all should have been attractive to this kid. Going to NM where they have a plethora of power forwards already makes absolutely no sense.

Iowa has signed a total of 3 white guys from out of state including Fleming. I really don't think the black/white thing has a big impact.
 


The Four position hasn't been Iowa's (Fran's) kind of game, so far... More like a 3++. This doesn't help Iowa when trying to recruit the 4. No matter how good a 4 recruit may perceive himself to be, he may wonder where his place will be on the team. And I'm sure other coaches will encourage the recruit's 'Iowa paranoia'.

This is as good an explanation as I can find or think of. It explains all 3 transfer refusals. But I can sort of understand Huff and Atwood thinking they're competing with Uthoff and Uhl if they want to play SF. But Wiliams? Really? If true, then I'd say the fault in Fran's recruiting is not anticipating obvious fallacies other recruiters are pitching about the Iowa program and talking over them. Besides which, it doesn't explain why Williams would then go to a school with even more bodies at forward. Unless Uthoff and Uhl are obviously more talented than anything New Mexico has- that I would believe.

New Mexico has a much, much nicer arena, and they have had much more recent success than Iowa.
 


I heard the team had a hot dog eating contest and Fran didn't think that this guy didn't stack up talent wise to what was already on the team and everyone is happy they dodged this bullet, just like Atwood.

He ran in a PTL practice and kept getting shut down by Ok Ukah.

Weak.

Absolutely no one said we dodged a bullet with Atwood, just that there wasn't a great need for another tweener who was weak defensively and it was easy to understand why he didn't want to compete for pt as a 3.

Clearly no one is saying that this time, Williams was a true power forward and good defender that we really could have used and there is no clear reason why he would go elsewhere.
 


Doesn't bother me too much. I like the 2015 recruits that Iowa is in on more than Williams.

I heard he loved the hot dogs, but didn't like to wear winter coats.
