Iowa's most recent 5 star Football recruits

Linebacker CJ Hilliard would obviously be a huge get for the upcoming Football recruiting class. Just about every publication has CJ among their top 50 prospects and rated a 5 star recruit.

The most recent names that I recall that landed at Iowa that were rated as 5 star recruits by at least some publication are the following:

Mike Jones (OL)
Matt Roth (LB)
Dan Doering (OL)
Tony Moeaki (TE)
Blake Larson (OL)

Am I missing anyone?

Bonecrusher Kyle Williams, who is now spending the rest of his best years in life in prison. I'm thinking he was a 5* rated player out of h.s.

i think CJ is already a Hawkeye. I think you are speaking of his brother, Justin.

just checked rivals for the bonecrusher. he was indeed a 5* player - #14 overall recruit, #2 position - class of 2004.

....and yes, C.J. is a current Hawkeye - class of 2014.
 


Bonecrusher...wow, what a waste. Incredible talent who got kicked out of Iowa before he even set down his suitcase then gets a second chance and instead of taking advantage goes to prison. I'm thinking that society is better off every day that he is in there.

I wish a could remember the exact quote but I don't and am too lazy to try to find it on the interwebs but when he went to Purdue the Purdue coach made a snide comment toward Iowa regarding him getting there and realizing that Iowa is not a place he wanted to be. If I ever get the chance to talk to that coach I'll say, "Hey, Dipwad..he didn't make that decision. He was kicked off the team after stealing from other members of the team. I guess when he got to Purdue and tried to rape and beat the **** out of two separate women that was just his way of saying that he didn't want to play for you. You're a bad person, if I get 3 wishes from a genie one of them will be for you two spend the last 20 years of your life praying to die because you'll be in a bad nursing home and you'll have suffered a stroke so you can't move or talk but are still aware and you'll lay there in your own feces for days. You'll have horrible bedsores. There'll be one nurse who is really sadistic and will come in late at night and put out cigarettes on the bottom of your feet. She'll also hold your eyelids open and poke your eyeballs and you'll be powerless to do anything but just lay there in agony."

I know this is a harsh wish but that was a crappy thing for him to say.

Iowa has only landed 3 five star players in the Rivals era, those being Bonecrusher, Blake Larsen, and Doering. The others mentioned in the OP were only 4*s.

I'm pretty sure Larsen was pre-Rivals (I think they didn't start doing an online database until 2002). As mentioned by the OP, the others were listed as 5-stars by at least one publication. Scout.com actually had Doering, Moeaki, and Richardson all as 5-stars in the '05 class.

I can't find an online publication that specifically says that Roth was a 5-star, but here is a link to ESPN's recruiting rankings that year. Roth was the #37 player in the 2001 class according to ESPN. 37 is a borderline 4/5 star player depending on the publication and the year.

OP clearly states 5* by any source.

I, too, was somewhat questioning Roth's status on this list - I don't recall him being a 5* by any publication.

Off the field was another story. Bonecrusher attacked, and attempted sexual assault on at leas 2 woman in West Lafayette. Yesterday Indiana courts sentenced Williams, who left Purdue after his freshman year to 37 year sin prison for the assaults. Story here in the Indy Star.

B1G schools have only received 29 commitments from 5-Star recruits over the past 5 seasons and 26 of them committed to either OSU, PSU or Michigan. That's 90%.

Rivals only gives out 26 to 33 5-star ratings per year, Scout around 50-55 so there aren't many to be had. None of the 5-stars were from Iowa.

Larsen was right at the beginning of the Rivals era. He was clearly their #1 ranked offensive lineman in the country in the 2001 class, with Matt Roth also rating very highly.

And I got a timeout for my "Ghost" ranting...:)

Tiller was okay (coach at Purdue during Bonecrusher Saga). Every coach/school has picked their version of Bonecrusher at SOME point. Some just extricate the guy before it goes too far, while other bounce the guy and he STILL goes out "wilding"...
