BTN Suggestions

Let me first say that I really enjoy certain features that the Big 10 Network runs, such as the Big 10 Elite programs (1985 Iowa Football as an example), Best of Features (QB’s of the 80’s as an example) and the All Time Greats Features (Nile Kinnick and Dan Gable as examples). I have DVR’ed, rewatched and thoroughly enjoyed many of these types of programs. That being said, I think BTN could do a much better job of selecting so-called “classic†games for each Big 10 school, as well as producing new programs for each school that could be included in the programming for the “School Days†features that usually run in the summer on BTN.

The Big 10 Network just finished airing their “Iowa†day yesterday, and while I enjoy being able to see Iowa programming featured, I have long had the complaint that the Big 10 Network has a bad habit of continually re-treading the so-called “classic†games of each Big 10 School.

Many of the games that the BTN selects for the “classic†games are not even considered to be memorable games by the vast majority of the fanbase. For example, I know that I am not alone in my feeling that Iowa’s 2OT football victory over MSU in 2007 was not a classic all-time Iowa victory, but that game has been re-played at least 4 times on BTN.

My suggestion is pretty simple – let the fanbase vote on the classic games that they would like to see re-broadcast in the “School Days†feature. Put the vote online on BTN.com, and provide a large sample of games to choose from for each school. This would be very simple to do, and it would give fans like me the opportunity to vote for games that they haven’t seen re-broadcast before.

My top 5 Iowa Football games that I would like to be re-broadcast on BTN:

1. Iowa beats down Michigan in the Big House in 2002
2. Iowa beats PSU 21-20 in Happy Valley with Tim Dwight returning a punt for a TD
3. Iowa throttles OSU at Kinnick in 2004
4. Iowa destroys Minnesota 55-0 in the last game in the Metrodome
5. Iowa beats Wisconsin in Kinnick to clinch a share of the Big 10 Title in 2004

My top 5 Iowa Basketball games that I would like to be re-broadcast on BTN:

1. Iowa beats North Carolina in Chapel Hill when Roy Sr. shoots the clinching FT instead of Horton
2. Iowa beats the Fab 5 in Carver in the first home game after Chris Street’s death
3. Iowa beats OSU to win the Big 10 Tourney in Horner and Brunner’s senior year
4. Iowa beats Kansas at KU to end their 60 some game home winning streak
5. Iowa beats Arkansas in Dr. Tom’s last year to advance to the Sweet 16

Make it happen BTN!!

Those are great lists. I will have to think of some more games but the '02 beatdown of big blue at the big house is my favorite game of the KF era.

they don't show blow-outs very often. Unless they are administered by OSU.

I agree with the OP, they often show the same six games or so. This year the 03 UM and 04 outbackbowl games are a breath of fresh air. How about Iowa Nebraska 1981? Iowa Wisconsin 2006 (I think) when mitch king had his coming out party or Iowa wisconsin 2003. Iowa wisconsin 2009. Iowa OSU 1987 (black helmet game).

lots to choose from.

The 1987 OSU game was the Chuck H to Marv Cook TD at the end. 1991 was the black helmet game. Would like to see both of them on BTN. Some other games I'd like to see:

1983 vs Ohio St - first win over OSU in a long time
1987 @ Arizona - Iowa won 15-14
1990 @ MSU - D carried the day
1990 @ ILL - one of the best big game performances by Iowa in my lifetime
1991 vs ILL - ILL lead much of the game but Iowa pulled it out late by 3.
2000 vs Wis - Iowa lost 13-7 but this was a turning point for the program, Iowa started to punch back
2001 vs Texas Tech
2003 @ Wis - one of my favorite games ever
2006 vs ISU - ISU was close to going up 17 in this game, but Iowa turned the tide and never looked back
2008 vs PSU - strangely BTN doesn't show this???

One of the issues, especially with older games, is the original production. BTN and B1G deals with ESPN/ABC are separate things, not "tied together". Thus, B1G/BTN may not have availabiity rights for some games as long as ESPN/ABC/Whoever "owns" it. My guess is that ESPN would hold onto stuff as long as possible to spite BTN. Also, they may still air them on ESPN Classic or ESPNU, so they hold them for that reason.

Bowl games may be different, as well, as the bowl itself may have a say in how/by whom re-treads are shown. And a bowl game is in a bind, there, as they want a good TV contract, but if they lose B1G in a match-up, TV contract may lose value. It creates the well-worn "vicious cycle".

Still, the 2007 MSU game is head-scratcher to me. Had it been a year we finished 7-5 and went to a bowl it might be understandable. But a "highlight" game isn't a "highlight" game, IMHO, if it isn't a "bowl" season.

Also, some of the games mentioned here ARE available on BTN On Demand. I watched the 1990 Illinois game in the last month or so.

EDIT: With regard to my comment about "production", depending on the nature of the original telecast, i.e., "national", "regional" or "local", that can affect the "worthiness" of having kept the original broadcast. This would be especially relevant to games pre-1995 or thereabout. Any 1980s-era fans will remember that some games, which local stations accessed feed--think the 1982 and 1987 Arizona games--had less-than-stellar "production value", i.e., it sucked in terms of "quality", be it video or audio quality, or in many cases, both.

You better believe I'd DVR all of those.... Send the list to the them. Email it, put it on their FB or something see if you can get a response....

Suggestion for you guys...look up Hawkeye Historian on YouTube. It may not be all the game but it has a lot. Usually around 20 to 25 minutes of each game. Most of the football games you are talking about are on his feed. Just wish he could get rid of Bob Davies screeching voice.

Some more suggestions:

+2009 Iowa at Michigan State - Even the BTN powers that be called that the B1G game of the year - above the frequently shown Iowa at tOSU game for the B1G title - and it was a BTN game. Stanzi to McNutt on the game's final play, following a bruising defensive battle, and a late Spartan TD with the help of a hook-and-lateral play;
+2002 Iowa at Penn State - OK, this is an ESPN broadcast. Still, this overtime contest was every bit as exciting as the Purdue game the next week, even though it featured a horrific meltdown in the Iowa pass defense in the 4th quarter. And to watch JoePa sprinting after officials at the end of the game was comical;
+2001 Alamo Bowl - Iowa returning to the bowl scene for the first time in the KFz era and holding off Texas Tech. After having cascaded back to the bottom of the college football world for a few years, I celebrated that 19-16 win like few others - and it was the springboard to an amazing 2002 season;
+1995 Sun Bowl - in the words of a former Iowa alum now living in Texas, and repeated often on one of the Hawkeye chat boards that day, "We are kicking Washington's (tail)!" That was a Husky team that, going into that game, actually could have made a case to be in the national championship picture;
+2004 Iowa at Minnesota - both Laurence Maroney and Marion Barber III rushed for over 150 yards each. In fact, Iowa was outrushed in that game by the Gophers 338-6 (!!!). But behind some key Hawkeye INT's, two first-half TD throws, five-for-five by Kyle Schlicher in field goals, and a critical late off-side call on Minnesota's defense, Iowa somehow survived the Metrodome. The Wisconsin game that sealed a share of the title was the next week.

Good stuff.

This morning they showed the 1990 IOWA vs. Michigan. For some reason I have never seen that game! Man did we screw up in that one. Can't believe we won that!

I have a few more ideas.

1985 vs MSU, at Purdue
1986 at Minnesota
1987 at o$u
1991 at o$u

great list, but keep in mind,,,if they showed those games what in the world are they going to do about fitting in all of those OSU games.

On the o$u topic I would also like to see if complete video footage exists for the 1956 game vs O$u. It would sure be fun to see Jim Gibbons TD catch, and Alax Karras clobbering the o$u qb for the win! If they want to show o$u that's a good one to have.
