Maize N Brew B1G Preview: Iowa

Just another example of the perception that is out there that Iowa made no real changes in its vanilla approach and just went back to doing what it always did.

Nothing about the Raider defense. Nothing about Iowa ' s occasional hurry up offense.
I guess the only reason Iowa finished strong is lack of injuries.

But that is fine. I know opposing coaches know better, but Iowa will continue to fly under the radar in the media, and in fan's perceptions.

I thought it was a pretty fair article. I think reason why the Raider defense and the hurry up were not mentioned is because Iowa didn't use them all the time. There were gimmicks that Iowa would throw in during games from time to time.

When it boils down to it, Iowa is the same they've always been. Their success will be determined by the play on both sides of the LOS. They'll try to run the ball, not make mistakes in the passing game, slow the pace of the game, & grind the other team into submission on offense and try to make their opponents put together long drives to score on defense.

Their take on Iowa’s recruiting is about 10 years behind. Other than that, yes we do have an easy schedule. That pretty much sums up the article.

good read. I'm starting to second guess the premise of an easy schedule. Who sez Iowa will be so good as to make those other teams seem not so good.? NW, PITT, MINNY, Hell Ball State may just upset the hawks....remember NIU? If the team's mind set is anything like those on the forums, they could lose a game or two before October.

I disagree. Iowa ' s big problem the last 4 years has been getting stops on 3rd and 4th down late in games, especially against the spread. Just think how 2010 would have different if it could made stops in the 4th quarter against Arizona, Wisconsin, NW, OSU and Minny.

Even 2012 just think if they could have made late stops against CMU, Purdue, Indy.

In 2013, the Raider defense changed all that, totally befuddling defenses on 3rd and 4th down. Of course, NW fumbling late in its game helped too, and finally learning to defend a fake punt helps too, but I consider the Raider defense the turning point last season.

The easy schedule gets overblown. It really only makes a difference of about 1 or 2 wins. So it can make a 6-6 team 7-5 or maybe 8-4 but it does not turn a 6-6 team into a 10-2 or 12-1 team.

name a team that wins despite their trench play. it all starts up front.

Stopping people on third down is certainly important/helpful. I don't know if the Raider defense is the be-all, end all. In 2008-09, Iowa's defense was lights out on 3rd down, allowing 35 and 36% conversion, respectively. Iowa didn't get out of the base 4-3 much at all that year. It's about having good players in the right scheme. In 2013, Iowa was back at those levels, allowing 36% conversion rate. I agree generally with the philosophy of getting more guys who can run on the field on 3rd and long, and appreciate Phil Parker's willingness to look at different things after the Iowa defense couldn't get off the field against Ohio State last year.

Will be interesting to see how the Iowa defense continues to evolve.

In the big 10 or any other power conference I agree.. You could look at Boise St. in their some what recent success and say otherwise in my opinion. I do agree though that if Iowa were to win the big 10 or come close anyway, the schedule will have absolutely nothing to do with it.

I wouldn't say the article was disrespectful but considering we've had their number for a number if years recently so you think they'd give us a little more props. Whatever, just win

Good point. But spread teams often negate average OL play because the ball is out of the QBs hands so quickly. Iowa has to have very good/great line play to win more than they lose. The normally don't have the speed/athletes on the outside of either side of the ball to negate average or below play on the LOS.

Iowa shouldn't ever have to make late stops against CMU, Purdue or Indy. I suppose it is simply a matter of perspective and, technically, it can be correct to say Iowa has lost games the past 4 seasons because the defense couldn't get off the field on 3rd down. Or, as I would argue, why does our coach game plan on the offensive side so that each game, no matter the compentition, will likely come down to one possession? Of course, whichever team executes at the end of the game in that situation, will likely come out on top. But why are we so conservative for all 4 quarters on offense? That puts the defense in too many unwinable situations and sooner or later they're bound to be defeated.

I thought the part about recruiting was right on. Our recruiting needs to be kick-started. I think we are/were seeing signs that past recruiting season and a half; but the new RC hire is a head scratcher. KF hired an assistant coach with no experience as a RC at any level, let alone, at the B1G level. I hope the RC does turn out to be tremendous. And if he does, I'll be the first to congratulate KF for his insight. But, I'm dubious about that happening.

Yep. Even a Michigan guy thinks our recruiting can be more than what it is.

It's always interesting to get the other sides opinions. It's hard to bash them and say well they missed X Y Z on what was going on. Is it really a surprise that they aren't following Iowa as much as we are? I just like seeing the different angles that other schools fans and writers look at Iowa and don't take anything more away from it then that.
