Happel pins Washburn

Scoreless 1st period.
Carter chooses down in the 2nd. Gets the escape and takedown to go up 3-0, then finishes it in 3:58.

Happel is definitely a stud. Pretty impressive when you can pin the defending 2 time state champ.
I also have to tip my hat to Washburn as he fought off the pin for almost 2 minutes before getting whipped over a 2nd time and getting stuck with 2 seconds left in the 2nd period. Believe Washburn's shoulder was pretty beat up as he lost his wrestle back match and looked like he could hardly move his arm.

Was also very surprised to see Chase Straw who was undefeated and ranked #1 for Independence get beat by a very impressive freshman in his semi match. Straw and been so dominant all season that I didn't think anyone would touch him at the state tourney. (guess that's why they wrestle the matches)

Actually, Washburn only fought the pin for 1 minute, but that's still impressive no matter who you're facing, much less when you're going against Happel. Damn near any other kid would have been finished within 20 seconds after getting into that position against Happel.

Happel is going to be something very special. Of course, it really helps when you've got genes like his and you're getting coached by Morningstar and Joey Slaton. I sure as hell hope Iowa can land him.

Agree that Happel would look good in a Hawk singlet. He also benefits from having Brad Smith as his HS coach
plus he probably receives good coaching tips from his father. (Dean)
Hope the Hawks also keep a close eye on Drew West from Highland Riverside. He is a freshman who is undefeated this season at 106 and has pinned his way through the state tourney so far. He will have a very difficult finals match tonight against one of the Portillo twins from Clarion.
(The other Portillo twin beat Drew's twin brother yesterday in the Qtrs at 113)

Happel's definitely got a perfect storm working in his favor. He made pretty short work of his man in the finals tonight; the shot he took in the second period was insanely fast and smooth, and he finished the move beautifully. I've not seen a kid at his age do the kinds of things he can. And once he gets you turned, you're dead.
