So, i think there is a story to this. Does anyone know why Iowa has played illinois so infrequently - even before the divisions were formed?

6 year break = standard 2 year break from old schedule rotation and more breaks (4 years) due to division formations and not getting matched up in cross games.

The new divisions solve this issue as we'll be playing the Illini every year going forward.

All of this purple and orange gear has just been accumulating in my house for the past couple years. Its gonna be great to wear it out. CANT WAIT!!!!!!

So you're a big Clemson fan? I don't know what that has to do with this thread... :confused:

I don't think there's any story to it, just how the schedule worked out. Unless the Illini lobbied the B10 to not have to play us. *******. :cool:

They are a pretty hated rival but really it is mainly a scheduling thing as Illinois seems to play Mich and OSU quite a lot, maybe as old time rivals from back in the day.

This will be an important game for Iowa. Need to thump them to keep taking their recruits.

They're bad. Whats your point?

Well, I remember reading a long thread, here or on Scout, that explained the history of the two schools football relationship. It was fascinating, there was a lot of bad blood I think, from something that happened before WWII. I think there was a hiatus for over a decade or. more..I just don't remember and I was hoping one of the lurkers knew the whole saga. I'm not referring to the annomolies produced by the divisional schedules.

anyone?

I thought maybe that was what you were getting at. Yes, they did not play each other from sometime in the early 50's to the late 60's, and it was literally because of they hated each other.

thaks for your reply vos. You're on to it. maybe I'll do some research over the winter and post an essay, which will be promptly hijacked by other posters (who are a lot like me).

Thanks Vos

great stuff

“Yes, the fans were wrong for throwing apple cores, but as long as the dastardly deed was done, I want to compliment one fan for his remarkable accuracy,” Schrader wrote. “His apple core hit an official squarely on the neck. I always say, if you’re going to do something unsportsmanlike, do it well.” -

When Iowa was on probation (Big Ten, IIRC) in 1930 or 1931, Illinois was a key "rat", and the Big Ten folks wouldn't hear any of our side of things. Illinois admins AND Illinois alums in Big Ten office were a huge part of it. In addition, it was said numerous times that Illinois was probably one of the biggest offenders (if not THE biggest) at that time. The issue was either "paying" players or allowing players to sign tuition "notes".

Read the historical series ("75 Years of Iowa Football" and the follow-up by Al Grady about the next 25 years) for complete info. Two really great books, for sure.

Growing up in SE Iowa, I always thought of the Illini game as a big rivalry, moreso than 80's Wisky or Goophers. I am glad the rivalry will finally be renewed, and love hearing about the long, bitter history between the schools.

As some of the other posters have pointed out, look at the re-alignment of divisions, the addition of new teams, etc. I don't know who selects the match-ups or how, but remember also these anomolies:

+While Iowa has continued to play Minnesota each year, next year's game in Minneapolis will mark 4 of the last 5 in that series played at Minny;
+Iowa has had two very recent breaks scheduled with (what many would have thought to be) a perennial in our schedule, Wisconsin, especially with the Heartland Trophy at stake (the second one went away with the addition of Maryland and Rutgers). Next year's game will also represent the third consecutive game played in Iowa City. Curiously, the road team has also won the last three;
+The only teams common to all of our schedules as far back as you want to go is Minnesota (and Iowa State, obviously). Northwestern has had only one two-year break dating back almost twenty years.

No sir - no story here.
