The Rundown: Hawkeyes Blast UNC-Wilmington

UNC-Wilmington is not a good basketball team. We think Iowa is going to be a good basketball team. Good basketball teams blast bad basketball teams. On Friday night in Iowa City, in front of an announced crowd of over 15,000, the Iowa Hawkeyes blasted UNC-W 82-39.

It was a solid season opener for Iowa, who has lofty goals for Fran McCaffery's 4th season at the helm.

Iowa was led by Jarrod Uthoff's 14 points and seven rebounds, both team highs. He did that in just 19 minutes of action. He scored a number of ways, including a few dribble drive moves and a three-point shot. He also added four blocks to his total. Peter Jok (11) and Aaron White (10) scored in double fitures but this was a game where nearly everyone contributed as it was over early.

Iowa held UNCW to 39 points -- the second fewest points allowed under McCaffery. Iowa held Howard to 36 points in 2012. Iowa recorded 12 blocks. Gabriel Olaseni led the team with five, while Uthoff recorded four. The team record is 13, set by Iowa last year against Illinois. The attendance was 15,293 which was the largest opening night attendance since 2001 (15,500 v. Md-Eastern Shore)

Here's The Rundown

Jarrod Uthoff: The star of this game. He looked comfortable out there, much more so than he did in the exhibition game. His stat line was stuffed for just 19 minute and he didn't force the action. He probably has a better half court game than does Aaron White, from an All Around perspective. He's not the energizer bunny that White is, but White doesn't have the floor game Uthoff has, either. At least, not yet.

Peter Jok: He is not afraid to shoot it, as he had a team high 13 shots. Some were good, some werent. That included 1-5 from beyond the arc and his first basket as a Hawkeye came on a made three. He showed a few nice head fake, one bounce 17-footers as well as a few dribble drives. He'll keep getting better but he is not shy.

Aaron White: 19 minutes, 10 points and six rebounds for White, who didn't have to do too much in this game. That's a great thing, as he'll be relied upon plenty later this month.

Melsahb Basabe: He started the game and brought a lot of energy. He played 14 minutes and scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds and a block. He is going to provide a lot of 'need you here' minutes this year. Some nights he might not be as required where he'll have a heavy load in others.

Gabe Olaseni: He was 1-8 from the floor, but he had a lot of great looks that will fall. He ahd eight points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots in 17 minutes. He is going to be a force on the glass this year and I think will lead the Big Ten in blocked shots. He will also log some good minutes because of Adam Woodbury's penchant for picking up two fouls before the first five minutes of the game has been played.

Adam Woodbury: Not much action in the first half but was active and aggresive in the second half. He will have some monster games this year and then disappear the next night. Consistency will be the last thing to come for him and might not happen until next year...he's on a very deep and talented team so he'll get to keep progressing without intense pressure.

Devyn Marble: 20 minutes, eight points, five assists, three steals and two rebounds. He looked just as happy to be dishing out assists as he did on his steal and runout dunk that he soared on.

Anthony Clemmons: 20 minutes, six points, five assists and three rebounds. Not a bad nice for Sapp.

Mike Gesell: 15 minutes, three points, three assits and two steals. It may take Gesell a bit to find his role on this team. With Josh Oglesby out for six weeks with a broken foot, it may be as a three-point shooter. He has one of the best looking shots on the team.

Zach McCabe: He was a facilitator on the night and giving good effort. He played 19 minutes and scored five points and grabbed seven rebounds. He hit Iowa's first trey of the year and was 2-5 on the night from long range.

The game was played at a decent pace and the fouling was not out of the norm..Iowa shot 24 free throws and committed just ten fouls. UNC-W committed 20 fouls, but that's hardly a call for alarm. The game seemed to be officiated within the bounds of what the sport is looking for.

Iowa will host Nebraska-Omaha at 3:30 on Sunday. UNO beat Northern Illinois on Friday night to being their season. Iowa hosts Maryland Eastern Shore next Thursday (14th) and Abiline Christian on Sunday the 17th, then Penn on the 22nd.

Iowa should begin the season 5-0 and then things get tougher when they head to the Battle 4 Atlantis and a game against Xavier right out of the chute.

Your first paragraph said it all. It's funny that some were so bent over that exhibition performance -- basically going thru the motions against a very solid Augie team (that I claimed is no worse than many of the non-conf opponents Iowa has played) and still winning by 22. When the lights were on, Iowa took care of business. (Isn't that refreshing? -- Sorry.)

While they're only middle-of-the-pack in the B1G for straight-up talent, they compensate for it by being so big / long, so deep, so aggressive and, possibly most important, "in sync", that they can just overwhelm you with so many waves. If they just keep up the intensity and go do what they know how to do, this could be one of the most memorable and adored "Iowa" teams in a couple decades -- a bunch of good basketball players, that give great effort to make the team greater than the sum of the players.

Sorry for going all "Hoosiers" but I honestly believe the only thing that can hold them down from contention is injuries.

I think Uthoff will prove to be a solid pickup for this team on both ends of the floor. I liked his offensive aggressiveness last night -- not afraid to mix it up inside. Defensively I saw him flash to the perimeter to force the shooter to rush the shot or put more of an arc on it, resulting usually in it clanking off the rim. He'll create match up problems. Will need to get his stamina up but he'll do that.

Uthoff appears to have that awareness which will make him a game ender. He, Marble and White would be three I'd want on the floor for sure at this point in time, in an end of game situation. Really impressed with what I saw last night.

Maybe someone can think of a player; but I cannot think of anyone in the BIG that has the all around skills that Uthoff has (assuming what we saw last night is the norm and not the exception.) I think Uthoff has a chance to be our best offensive weapon by the middle/end of the BIG season. And I agree with Jon, having Uthoff, Marble and White on the floor in end game situations should be pretty solid. While I think he will take longer to get there, I saw something in Jok last night that might also get him court time in end game situations by the end of the season. He just has "it" and needs to smooth his game out, get his legs under him and learn good vs. bad shot; understanding Fran gives him the green light, some good shots can be passed up for better shots later on in the clock.

This was my first time seeing uthoff and he's a different player than I anticipated. Didn't realize he was so thin and in turn quick which I think fits Fran's umtempo philosophy and lengthy on d.

The thing I noticed last night is that Fran put Jok on the floor with arguably are best defenders in Uthoff Sapp Olaseni and McCabe. We need Jok to learn Defense and what better way then to let him play with the best of our team. This lets our best players bark out where he is supposed to be on the court.

Uthoff's game will compliment everyone else. He is the most important piece to iowa reaching the next level because of the ability he will take away from teams being able to focus on white and marble as he can do the things they do. He is also a good defensive player. He can handle the ball and play the 3 and 4 spots. Exactly what we needed at the 3 spot. He should be starting by the big 10 season.

I really want to overreact to one game, so I'm going to.

It just looks like we have the potential to dominate inside, especially on defense and in rebounding, and we seem to have more guys who can score. Dammit we could be good. Make some threes and we'll be incredible.

Key right there, if Iowa can find somebody to hit the perimeter shot consistently the inside game will dominate.

Dekker of Wisky? Dekker can play anywhere on the floor, and is a very good shooter/rebounder. Maybe Bo likes the Dekker/Uthoff type players?

Love that Jok is not afraid to shoot. Oglesby gets gun shy very quickly, if you're out there to be a shooter you need to be confident enough to let them fly every time you get a look. I think Basabe is going to have a great year, he's really flying under the radar so far.

Jon, Gesell is a game ender also, plus worthy of minutes, as the ball moves best with him in the flow, whether he has it in his hands or when he is in motion.

He always has liked these types. Combo cowards who can hit 3s. These are just 2 recent and talented ones.

I can see the points made about Decker from Wisky, but he's closer to 6-7 and Uthoff is 6-9. I could be wrong, but Decker is more of a 2/3/4 where Uthoff is a 2/3/4/5. We'll see, Uthoff has played a grand total of 1 regular season games in college; but he looks legit. After last night's game, and I've said this before, I would really like to see Marble, Jok, White, Uthoff and Gabe on the floor. That seems like the best combination of offense and defense, with the possible exception of Jok on D, right now.

Just to clarify, is there any one on this board who thinks augustana would beat unc-Wilmington? This is a litmus test on credibility.
