Will Coach Fran leave if we have a great year?

If he does, I would say thank you for getting the program back to respectability.

Iowa with their facilities, money and premier conference would be appealing to many coaches that wouldn't have taken the phone call 4 years ago.

I think Fran is already on the radar of a lot of AD's. If he isn't then they haven't been paying attention to what is happening in Iowa City.

I don't think he will leave. One of the reasons he came to Iowa was the proximity of the in-laws. They live in the Twin Cities. Iowa City is 4.5 hours away. Close enough to visit, but far enough to limit those visits.

Besides, he has it good at Iowa. If he continues to win and improve and gets some guys to the NBA, he'll start getting the 4 and 5 star players necessary to compete on a regular basis.

Just my 2¢ .. ..

GO HAWKS!!!

I imagine the NBA could come calling for him, I know Thibs hasn't been getting along with the front office in Chicago, wouldn't surprise me if Fran is the head man there next year.

Bwahahaha. The average Bulls fan is too dumb to know the difference between Iowa and Iowa State, but suffice it to say that after Tim Floyd, they will riot if another "Iowa" coach gets the head job there.

Don't underestimate the BJ Armstrong connection, the Bulls will want to keep D.Rose happy so he doesn't decide to just skip the playoffs again this year, when BJ says his guy wants Fran, I have to think the Bulls will listen. It could happen as soon as mid season this year. Hopefully, Sparew has learned well and can lead this team deep into March or even April like last year.

Like.

I think he'll wait until his kids are out of school. Well, actually his kids will be playing for him at Iowa, so probably when his kids graduate from Iowa.

Wait, never mind. Thought this was the football forum 5 years ago.

If this happens, Iowa needs to turn to a proven leader to run its basketball program--Les Jepsen. [And by "proven leader" I mean "tall person".]

I would not be surprised if teams had already put out some feelers for him. He has had success everywhere he has gone, and I guarantee he's on the radar of some prominent ADs who may be shopping for a coach in the next year or two (Texas, Louisville after Pitino retires, Duke???). The reason so many young(er) coaches are staying put is that there will be some high-level vacancies coming about in the next few years when Pitino, Coach K, Roy Williams, Boheim, etc. retire (although Boheim already had a successor).

I think Texas definitely kicks the tires after Rick Barnes "retires" at the end of the season. Not concerned about any others, really, after this season.

Troll City. No effin' way Duke goes after Fran. Absolutely not a chance in heck. And Louisville would want a greasy guy with a slick bag man. They don't want an X and O coach, they want a Jimmy and Joe recruiter.

What the heck has Thibs done to be fired? Besides win a championship. Not his fault they overspent on Boozer and can't get D Rose another star to play with.

Now that's how you troll the basketball board!

As a Hawkeye fan I'm extremely pleased with the progress Fran has made. However, if you think anybody outside Iowa is noticing, I think you're mistaken.

Nobody notices a jump from 10th to 6th in the Big ten if you don't make the tourney. This year could change that as I expect them to make the tourney and think they could win a game or two.

However, at this point no AD could sell the fact of bringing in a coach that brought a team from near the bottom of a conference to the middle and has 0 NCAA tourney apperances.

Do you not take notice when Mississippi State moves up in the SEC? Do you not notice when Arizona State has a good year in basketball? Of course you do. People notice. Enough with this "we're just 'lil ol' Iowa" crappy attitude. Sure, Iowa is not UNC, Duke or Kansas, but we're one of the most important and winningest programs in the history of college basketball.

How quickly people forget that Steve Alford was our coach. That street cred doesn't just leave a school.

BJ Armstrong? Pffft.

Don't dismiss the Les Jepsen talk. http://www.hawkeyenation.com/forum/basketball/7359-dont-dismiss-les-jepsen-talk.html
