An Optimistic Fan's View

We lost 1 Big Ten game to a great defense. I hope the team will use the bye weeks to improve and play well against OSU. I'll be cheering for Legends teams to get beat so we can improve our standing in the division and bowl hierarchy. I'll be at the Ohio State wearing black and gold, not blasting my team on an anonymous blog. I'll critique individual games and performances, which is different from criticizing and writing off individual players and coaches. l"ll hope for whatever is still possible (10-2) because if sports were predictable, every one who bets on them would be rich. If the team shouldn't give up on the season, neither should I. I prefer fans who "drink Kool Aid" to fans who try to shove poison down other people's throats. I expect players to project a positive image of the team; I expect posters to project a positive image of our fan base.

I stopped reading at this point. Their 115th ranked passing offense and 9th ranked (in the B1G) rushing game tore us up, with their soph QB starting his first ever B1G game. I suggest you re-evaluate your thoughts on the game and current state of the program and then get back to us with a more cogent analysis.

OMG where have you been under a rock. This is a trainwreck and you can paint it anyway you want, but it's still a trainwreck.

Are you saying the hawks are a trainwreck or this thread is a trainwreck?

I am with the OP for the most part. I think the hawks can win all three remaining home games. The coaches need to find a way to get the offense rolling from the beginning so we get the lead at home. The defense can make some big plays and just jump on the opponent and dont let them back up.

I don't think I made any claims or predictions about the team. This post is a commentary on so-called "fans" who declare the season a "train wreck" with 6 Big Ten games to play.

I like trains.

Let's see if the good captain can muster up a train wreck for everyone to enjoy. I have every confidence that he can.

I am also optimistic about this year. Let's look at some recent Iowa seasons that the pessimist may also have given up on. Most of these teams look even worse starting out and they all had first year QBs as this team does. If they can do it this team can.
1982 started 0-2 finished 8-4 won the Peach Bowl.
1987 started 3-2 finished 10-3 won the Holiday Bowl.
2004 started 2-2 finished 10-2 won the Capital One Bowl.
2008 started 3-3 finished 9-4 won the Outback Bowl.

Its fans like you who are keeping this program a float. Go Hawks.

I hate saying this, I really do as I want a reason to be optimistic, but those teams were a lot more talented than this one. Losing on the road at #3 Nebraska, #17 Tennessee, or in a hurricane at Arizona State is a little more acceptable than losing at home against a MAC school and a middle-of-the-pack MSU team.

I think this team would have a good shot at beating the 82 team. I give a slight edge to 2013 on offense. Jake has a slightly higher qb rating than Long did that year and he is on pace to have about 1300 more total yards. Both teams are good at running the ball also. The 82 team was replacing a lot of starters on D. Advantage 2013 based on line play. 2013 has a more experienced defense that should do well against the 82 run game. 82 had amazing special teams but I don't think that will be enough for them to pull this out.

This is year three of the down cycle. Therefore your comparable years are 2001and 2007. An optimist would be hoping for a 2001 type year.

The team won 6 regular season games and had a bowl victory. That was back in the day of 11 games so they went 4-4 in conference to get there. This year they just need 3 conference wins. An optimist finds those wins.

There IS a difference between optimism and delusion.

People are acting like Iowa lost by 50 Saturday. Iowa played like dog **** and Michigan State's offense cant play any better. Connor Cook was making Peyton Manning like throws, that smash route on the sideline with Lowery draped on the receiver?? Are you ******* kidding me? He has never made that throw in his life and probably never will again along with about 5 other completions he had.

Optimism is good. I wish there was good reason for it. Some of us are realists. We can watch a game and see us being out coached, time and time again. We can look at our speed on the field and see that we are out classed, badly in that department against most every team we play against. The athletic kids (see fast kids) we do have, seem to struggle to find the field more than a few plays per game. Times are changing in college football, but Iowa is not. I am hoping like hell for a 6-6 season. I am not optimistic about anything better than that.

Crazy how year after year other team always have their best games against Iowa.

Not saying that at all. Ive seen Michigan State play numerous times and Connor Cook hasnt completed those throws in his career that he was Saturday.

What was even more amazing is that the MSU receivers only had one drop the whole game. I think Dantonio or someone over there said they were averaging 5 a game or something like that. They have a veteran offensive line and some weapons on the outside...plus a few big backs. They put a good offensive game together with a few weeks to prepare. That being said, our defense wasn't the reason we lost. It was poor recognition and the inability of our OC to change his gameplan when a major portion of it wasn't working...ie the running game. My feeling is that we should have come out throwing from the first series...and forced them to change out of that 8 man look. No, it took us 1.5 quarters to do that...and at that juncture our D had already played 18 minutes. Then we came out the 3rd quarter (due to field position) and did the exact same thing...we tried to run the ball. Game over.

There is no room for optimism on this board! How dare anyone find anything positive about this year. This is a board for whining and complaining only.
Iowa is 4-2 but the wins don't count because they were against bad teams and the losses are horrible losses because they were against bad teams. The best QB and RBs are not being played which is the same every year under Ferentz. He only plays seniors even if they are horrible.
Everything is bad! I hate life!
