Could the Big 10 and Big East Team Up?

Against Notre Dame? Could these two conferences strike a deal to get Notre Dame to join the Big 10? Think of it like this the Big East tells Notre Dame that they are no longer welcome in there basketball conference and that they will no longer schedule games with Notre Dame. Then the Big 10 tells Notre Dame that they will no longer schudule schedule games with them until they join the Big Ten. If Notre Dame then joins the Big 10, then the Big 10 agrees not to steal any Big East Teams. What do you think?

Why would the Big East do this? The Big Ten expansion has the potential to destroy the Big East in the next few years, not really sure why they would want to do anything to help us out.

If anything, the Big East should pay ND to join them. Kicking them out to the Big Ten, and then getting half their teams swallowed by the Big Ten makes no sense.

I don't think you guys read my whole post. I said if this happened then the Big 10 would agree not to take any Big East teams.

His point is that if they help the Big 10 get Notre Dame, that the Big 10 wouldn't take any Big East teams and thus, not destroy the conference.

Interesting theory--I could see this scenario.

But the Big Ten is going big. 16 teams. That means Big East teams, and they'll be happy to hop on board.

Why would the B10 do this? ND's not THAT valuable. They need a couple Big East teams to make a 16 team conference work...

I'm thinking 14 teams is more realistic anyway. But assuming that ND joined, I would like to add Pitt and Nebraska. That would be a very solid addition, and one that adds to the overall depth of the conference. Pitt and ND both have pretty good basketball programs, ND and Nebraska have good women's basketball programs. Nebraska also has a very good baseball program. Those are my 3 favorites, as they would help the Big Ten AND Iowa. Texas would do more for the Big Ten than any of these three, but I think adding Texas would hurt Iowa.

We are not adding any school because they have a good baseball program.

I would think that Mizzou adds a lot more than Pitt.

Notre Dame, Mizzou, and Rutgers would be my ideal threesome considering all the points of emphasis (athletics, academics, and TV markets).

This is not a given, just speculation.

Sure, nothing is final until it is announced. However, enough people have said this is happening to make it more than likely. What has this done? It has made
the other leagues want to get bigger. The ball is rolling.

But, more importantly, why would the Big Ten want to shelve any chance of opening the Eastern Seaboard to only get ND. Not a good tradeoff. Particularly when the ACC is at the ready.

As a fan, I really don't give a crap about anything other than what goes on on the field. The fact that Iowa is an AAU member did not make me decide to come here. I came here because we have an excellent journalism program, and I love the Hawks. So when I judge what schools I want, I'm going to pick schools that benefit us on the field.

Now I understand the current state of the field of journalism.

Well you aren't going to find me writing about politics or anything. Sportswriting is what I want to do. And as a sports fan, the money and academics don't mean much to me when I look at potential candidates. I want to see good football.

Delany said at the beginning that they will look beyond just football and basketball when it comes to athletics. That's another thing that made Texas so attractive, because they have elite non-revenue sports as well. So that does play a factor.

And going by the numbers in that article, Nebraska, Pitt, and Notre Dame would fit, financially. Pitt comes in a little low (at $34,365,175), but Notre Dame and Nebraska more than make up for it ($47,629,255 and $54,487,990, respectively). The total added revenue for 3 teams needed to equal $114,500,000 for the Big Ten to keep the current payout structure. Those three teams would bring in an estimated $136,482,420. That would be good for a $9,748,744.29 increase for all Big Ten schools. Sure there's another school or two that could possibly bring more (Texas and Mizzou). But it's not like we'd be taking chump change by passing over them. Mizzou brings more than Pitt, but brings less than ND and Nebraska. So we aren't giving a lot up there.

The Big 10 will not expand to 16. You guys are getting carried away with this...and as a Big 10 fan, why would you even really want them too?

it's not "us guys" getting carried away with this- 16 is a logical monetary consideration and has been speculated by way more than "us guys". now, if we were speculating a 27 team big ten, then i can see your getting carried away point.
