Expectations too high

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer here, but I have been reading so many posts that I believe are setting unrealistic expectations for this team. I love Iowa bball but everyone here seems to have a short memory regarding our woeful shooting. That should concern everyone more than it seemingly does. Also, Marble is the guy McCaffrey is hanging his hat on, and from what I've seen and heard, this is a huge problem. I do not believe he is a team guy and I question his mental (and physical) toughness. NBA talk last summer is not a team mindset. His many 1-14 shooting performances in mostly big games against superior athletes should also be a huge concern (i dont buy the injured thing, fran wouldve never let him get killed in the media if he couldve just said he was playing hurt, it was between the ears i think). I hope I'm wrong, but I see a lot of frustration with him this coming season when we play good teams.

Iowa will have more options and I think that will matter more than anything. I think shooting will improve and with the two additions of Jok/Uthoff gives Iowa options and players with abilities that the roster lacked last year. Also, I don't see Gesell/Woodbury going backwards, same with Clemmons.

Expectations can be a burden if players or fans allow them to be. Iowa can finish as high as 3rd, but I don't see it. Iowa will make the NCAA tournament...baby steps.

Iowa shot poorly as a team at times. Marble was a stud during the NIT.

Expectations should be high. Now does that mean that some will meltdown after a loss...yes. There is really no stopping that its your choice whether you want to get caught up in that or not.

Iowa was 301st in the country and 11th in the B10 in 3 point shooting, it's going to be almost impossible for them to shoot any worse. They also were an unlucky 2-7 in games decided by 4 points or less. If Iowa simply regresses to the mean in both those categories they should be able to improve by a couple games. Iowa stayed in games last year by playing good to very good defense, with 90% of our rotation back I don't think we get worse on that side of the ball.

Marble did not have "many" 1/14 games but he did have to force things at times when he was surrounded by guys who couldn't hit outside shots and couldn't create their own offense, and despite Iowa's shooting struggles they still had an above average offense. I look for Gesell, Clemmons and Woodbury all to be improved on the offensive end. I look for Uthoff to provide a boost and Jok to steal some of Ogelsby's minutes. Fran will have a lot more options on the offensive end this year, if Marble is having a 1/14 type game this year we should have more guys capable of stepping up on offense.

You base a season on one game? Brilliant Look at football Hawks got hammered by ASU and there was total fallout and Hawks ended up having an excellent season BB teams have bad games that's why Duke and NC don't go undefeated and gamblers bet on long shots. It's like this Debbie, sometimes there's a tremble in the force

Great post. But u will get ripped. marble is indeed not a team guy. I call him a ball hog. U say he's just not a team guy. Kinda the same. not to mention way to many posters are anointing uthoff before he's even played a single second of d1 ball. Same with jok. We will be good, but, people need to chill.

I think you are the one looking at things the wrong way. In your mind, they shot terrible last year, they had a huge problem guy as their team leader, and they started 3 freshmen for most of the year and you seem to think it will get worse? I haven't seen anyone predicting final fours this year, but to expect them to be a contender in the B1G and make the tournament seems extremely logical.

Are you HawkeyeRyno?

You haven't ever anointed anyone huh?

You learn from a couple years ago with Oglesby...oh nope you haven't you have anointed Gabe better than Woodbury.

I don't see anyone killing Johnny for his post, I don't think expectations are too heigh, with a veteran team and some good younger players coming in I would say they are what a starving fan base is looking for.

Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State are the best teams headed into next season. Iowa having a legit shot to go ahead of OSU or fall right behind them is very probable.

How the heck did we win 25 games with so many weaknesses? I get the feeling Little Debbie is clad in mustard and ketchup. They seem to LOVE bringing up the Baylor game.

Marble is a team guy. There are times when he takes a lot of shots and things might be better if he didn't, in general. Then again, when you look at the fact that he was the only guy last year who could consistently create his own shot, and there are times when that is necessary and Iowa shoots it so badly that there is plenty of help in the lane if he does drive, he is more contested.

Marble's fine, and I think you're trolling.

The outside shooting for this team could have meant the difference in three for four games last year, and Iowa is in the dance and 24 reg season wins.

I watched every minute that was available last year and at no point did I think Marble was hurting the team for being selfish.

Ghost, is that you??? You always troll however you slipped in this post. Nice work

Trying to do too much is different than being selfish...at times I thought Marble tried to do too much and his play suffered as a result at times.

If any true Iowa Basketball fan who has suffered through the past years of frustration and long winters isn't excited about this years upcoming season..that's crazy to me. I don't believe any of the good posters on here are anointing Iowa to be a Final Four team this year..but if you honestly think this team won't be a tough out come March then that's your opinion. My expectations are high..this is the deepest team we have had in years.

There's a different feel to the program that I haven't felt in years. Fran will have them ready you better believe it. Why anyone feels the need to try and tell Iowa BBall fans to temper their expectations is beyond me. I can't wait!
