I'll take Hammons over McGary without hesitation. I think McGary is going to be in for a rude awakening come conference season. He may dominate in non conference but the Big 10 teams will be ready to limit him IMO.
I guess I don't understand the difference between each of them this season really. I look at Hammons and think if someone stands their ground he is ineffective because for all the "great" moves he has, he has a tendency to travel when a defender just bodies up on him.
Another thing, people point to his double doubles...look at the games, blowout losses, except for Penn State and their incredible post defense. It is no different than saying well: "Oglesby did nothing when it mattered." Honestly, what is the difference? The guy is 7'0" and 280lbs and if the refs are letting him be physical and get position...then he will do what he wants. The problem is he has the aggression of gnat and allowed himself to get taken out of games that he should have done better, like against the better teams when Purdue was in the game...at Michigan comes to mind, he quits calling for the ball.
Here is why I will take McGary. They guy plays harder than anyone on the floor, plus he has some talent. His main issue this year until the five or six games of the regular season was how hard he plays worked against him. He has the ability to take the 15-ft jump shot and has the ball handling ability to pump fake and then go to the hoop. McGary works for everything that he gets, but he is a little rough around the edges. He does have post moves, but this year in college I think was the rude awakening for him, nothing came easy and his pure size was neutralized a lot. Look for McGary to put in more work and get a post move or two. The other thing I love about McGary is the way he defends, yes Hammons can block a shot, but McGary plays some of the best post defense I have seen from a freshman in a long time. Again, that comes from his ability to be an effort guy all the time. McGary will not be Michigan's No. 1 option next season and he may again be their 5th option when all is said and done.
Neither of these guys will be POY, but I like McGary a whole lot more than Hammons, I just don't see the mentality to want to dominate from Hammons that he needs to get, he is an enigma. Will he be consistent or continue to show flashes and be a player that everyone will wonder why isn't better because he can do everything?
