Game would not have been as close with healthy Gesell

For the few minutes he played, Gesell showed what another shooter does to our lineup. If teams double, trap and overplay Marble, a guy like Gesell can have a field day by curling off screens and finding open spots to knock down jumpers. He is obviously in a lot of pain, but his instant offense helped last night. At this point, I would rather see Ingram off the bench than Oglesby. Props to Woodbury last night for tough D on Len. That was a tough matchup and Len owned the paint defensively, but Woodbury bothered him on the other end and forced him to take some bad shots.

To be fair Maryland had a freshman sitting on their bench unable to play that averages 8 points a game (based on what the announcers said last night). I turned to my wife and said that's just a wash for us not having Gesell...the real Gesell at 100%.

That was the closest 11 pt win I can remember. I didn't feel like it was in the bag till Mays 3. Turned a 7 pt game with a min to go to 10. If he misses that and they get a quick bucket it woulda been a different game entirely. My hats off to Turgeon for not playing the hack kids game to draw it out longer. They could have but it would have been futile.

Larger point being that throughout the regular season, guys looked to Marble to save the day. The past few games, guys like McCabe, May, Olaseni and Clemmons have hit shots to make up for no / very limited Gesell. Not as dramatic as McCabe or May, but Olaseni hit that baseline jumper when things were starting to slip. I wish Oglesby could contribute, but the dude cannot make shots in games.

Yeah, but he kills it in practice.

Another tribute to the depth of this team is that Marble doesn't have to be "the man" every game. Although I was really concerned vs Maryland when at the end of the game, Sapp was at the point. That's gotta be Marble's role. Dude is money at the FT line. Especially under pressure.

To your Clemmons point... I have been nervous with his play late in the season, and was nervous last night. I was quite pleased with his play last night, tho. IIRC, no turnovers and not a liability. Additionally, on the shot he was blocked, it was a great drive to the basket (unfortunately ended in a swat).

To the OP... Gesell came in and lift the offense for a period when it seemed to be stalling. Great play from MG. Hopefully he can give some quality minutes like that vs Baylor.

In last night's game, Marble didn't do all that well against Maryland's press. Me thinks there's a real competition between Gesell and Clemmons for point guard.

If Iowa wins the NIT, I may have to change my name. Yeah, I'll deal with it!
