HN basketball player tournament

Pre-Olson would have to be Murray Wier, I would think. He was the first official NCAA season scoring leader in the 47-48 season. For those who don't know. Murray Wier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I won a basketball at the Iowa summer camp as a kid answering that trivia question!

Weir, Herb Wilkinson and Dick Ives are all right there as far as the Pops Harrison years. I give the nod to Wilkinson, as he was Iowa's only three time all-American. Dick Ives was a three time all conference player and two time all-American, and once dropped 43 in a game, which was quite the accomplishment for that time.

But MeatMan's "Pre-Olson" categorization is far too broad, considering that three of the best eras in Iowa basketball preceded Lute. Pops Harrison, Bucky O'Connor and Ralph Miller are the gold standard of Iowa basketball, and most of our best players played during these years (1945-1970). Pre-Lute, you have Kevin Kunnert, the entire Six Pack, Sam Williams, Don Nelson, Dave Gunther, The Fabulous Five and the entire late-40s machine.

A lot of unimformed people wonder where the fevered passion Iowa basketball fans are capable of summoning comes from, considering we have had a lot of national success for the last 30 years. It comes from Pops, Bucky and Ralph.

Quick thoughts:

If you've got Jaryd Cole and Jared Riner on there, you've got to have Melsahn.

I'd put Tony Freeman in ahead of either Chauncey Leslie or Brody Boyd.

Cole is definitely debatable. but, look at Riner's numbers, he put up a lot better numbers than i remembered. basically averaged 10pts 8 reb and 10pts 7 reb his junior and senior seasons. i'd bump Cole out before Riner.

going to look over the Davis era now, we'll see what i can come up with.

grape, i thought about just starting from 1980 on solely due to my lack of knowledge about the eras before then, but knew that would cause rioting. how about you come up with a top 16 from that era, cause all i'd be doing is looking at stats.

also, worley is a good suggestion. but i think i'll keep riner just to balance out the big men.

this looks like the rough draft for the Alford/Lick/Fran bracket, not necessarily in order

1 Haluska
2 Brunner
3 Horner
4 Oliver
5 Reggie Evans
6 Gatens
7 Recker
8 Chauncey Leslie
9 Reiner
10 Dev Marble
11 Cole
12 Erik Hansen
13 Pierce (i know, i know)
14 Aaron White
15 Mike Henderson
16 Brody Boyd

make a case for someone to be included if you like, but remember you have to bump someone off to do it. here's a link to stats via ESPN if you want reference. Iowa Hawkeyes 2012-13 Statistics - Team and Player Stats - Men's College Basketball - ESPN

also, we had some pretty good scorers during the early Alford era, too bad we couldn't translate that to more wins.

Justin Johnson and Tony Freeman are glaring omissions that would easily bump Mike Henderson and Brody Boyd. In fact I would make a case for Jake Kelly and Anthony Tucker over Henderson/Boyd

Davis era (graduated 1986-1999)

1. Marble
2. BJ
3. Gamble
4. Lohaus
5. Earl
6. Woolridge
7. Street
8. Horton
9. Settles
10. Jepsen
11. Val Barnes
12. Bowen
13. Kingsbury
14. Murray
15. Koch
16. Ricky Davis

have to admit, this one is a lot tougher. i know the last three listed are highly debatable and you could probably change Murray, Koch, and Davis for folks like Moe. give me some feedback. also, Jepsen is also on the cutoff if you can make a good case. looks like in all 8 players on the 86-87 squad were drafted. pretty impressive, though there were more rounds in the draft back then.

willing to bump Boyd/Henderson for Freeman, but it really is hard for me to adequately judge talent from that last Alford team through the Lick years. Kelly might have been a star in Fran's system (IMHO) but that team was sooo bad that it really is hard to tell.

Actually Kelly was a star in Licks system, it fit him perfectly and had he stuck around and Tucker kept out of trouble we probably would still be dealing with Lick as a coach, or it might have kept him around for another year or 2. Blessing in disguise.

But one thing your list does do is show just how bad Iowa basketball has been the past 15 years.

If you are going to include 1 and done players like Ricky Davis on 1 list than Tyler Smith should be included on the other.

^this! Going to probably pair down the field to 8. give me your top 8 from the Davis and the A/L/F eras and though that will be tougher to leave people out, it's better than just running out of names and having to add role players.

Pre-Olson: Connie Hawkins. If he doesn't count, then I vote for John Johnson.
Olson/Raveling: Ronnie Lester
Davis: Andre Woolridge
Alford/Lick/Fran: Pierre Pierce (IMHO, the best basketball player of this era, regardless of what he was like as a human being.)

8-man rotation from the ALF era:
PG: Jeff Horner, Dean Oliver
SG: Pierre Pierce
SF: Adam Haluska, Tyler Smith
PF: Greg Brunner
C: Reggie Evans, Erik Hansen

here's my top 8 (not in order necessarily) of the Alford/Lick/Fran era.

1 Haluska
2 Brunner
3 Horner
4 Oliver
5 Reggie Evans
6 Gatens
7 Recker
8 Dev Marble

very tempted to balance this out with another big man like Erik Hansen. Also think Pierce could probably be on here too.

Now that I think again about it, maybe swap Adam Haluska for Tyler Smith.

Edit: D'oh. I meant I would swap Luke Recker for Tyler Smith.
