Ten B1G Things: PSU style

#1 When our bigs end up hedging a ball screen out top, why do they carry out the hedge so long? That's usually when Adam picks up one of his fouls. It also leaves the opponents big man open when he rolls to the basket. UI got burned on it once last night, surprised it doesn't happen more often.

#2 Why do other teams make 3pt'ers look so easy, when the Hawks make it look damned near impossible? 6/21 28.6% Not naming names, but.........1/6 from 3 pt. That's not helping and it's time to change the amount of PT given to some.

#3 I sometimes wonder, is Aaron White trying to score or trying to get fouled? His 3 pt dagger at the end of the 1st half was cold blooded.

#4 The game last night looked terrible on TV. Not the play, the actual visual product. I don't know if it was the lighting or the floor or just my signal, but it was bad. Lots of glare from the floor. PSU's blue made Iowa's uni's look blue.

#5 I cringe when we go into isolation mode at the end of the half or late in a shot clock. I know it's very popular in college hoops and many teams do it well. I don't think UI does. Not right now with Marble less than 100%. Seems like we can get a better look just by running our offense.

#6 Boy, the Hawks struggle vs a good zone. If I were an opposing coach I think I'd sit in zone and watch Iowa clank away from 3.

#7 Iowa's free throw shooting was great last night and for the season ranks 3rd in the conference at 71%. Scoring offense is also third at 72.2 How can UI score so many points when they can't shoot?

#8 Not sure how many turnovers Iowa had on the night, but some of them were just ugly.

#9 Killed PSU on the boards last night. For the season, #3 in the league in offensive rebounds. #2 in defensive rebounds. (updated from original posting)

#10 I really like the interior passing of this team. That's a valuable skill and the sign of unselfish players.

tl;dr

The turnovers were bad. I agree with the 1-3-1. Iowa has a very hard time with it. A win is a win, so I'll take it.

Lots of good stuff, and I agree with most of them. I'll add my two cents on a few of your thoughts.

1. I actually like how hard we hedge on the screens, and I think Adam does a very good job on this for a freshman and we really haven't been hurt much at all by big men rolling to the basket because we've been able to push the guard 30-35 feet from the basket. I think Olesani struggles on this much more than Woodbury because he doesn't have a good feel on when to release.

5. Agreed, I would like to have MG running some of the sets we run for JO at the end of the half.

8. Yep, a lot of the turnovers were just lazy perimeter passes against the zone and led to easy lay ups, Clemmons had a couple brutal ones

9. We're actually 6th in the B10 in offensive rebounding % so if we are ranked number one by some metric that's more of a product of our tempo than anything.

OR - we miss a LOT of shots and have a lot of more opportunities to get boards. Either way, it's a good stat.

I would to, Penn State was daring us to shoot from the 3. Iowa could have shot a lot more from the 3 as they were wide open, but a lot of times they would do that head fake (which is not working) and drive.

1 - Generally like the hedges...agree Adam gets some dumb fouls out there but doesn't impact his minutes.

2 - They banked in a 3 from the top of the key...what more can we do?

3 - White needs another year in the weight room to get stronger...think he's just trying to get the ball to the rim.

6 - NW runs a ton of zone (very well) and we swept them so we're doing something right.

7 - When we make them we usually win...missed them in some of the close losses and White missed again last night.

8 - Agree...some were ugly/lazy.

That was the worst image quality for a live game I have seen in a long time. I could almost envision Scripted "Iowa" on the unis and Lute on the sidelines, as if I was watching a 3rd-4th generation copy of an old game.

1. I know people complain about college basketball being such a low scoring game. This is one thing I have really noticed. Refs allow far too much contact on these types of plays. I don't understand why bigs are allowed to body guards on the hedging. You would see alot more blow bys if the refs actually started calling fouls when bigs body bump guards. It stops guards from being able to turn the corner or pass to the player diving away from the play.

3. White is just kind of stuck inbetween. He is not strong enough to finish through guys with consistency. Right now teams are doing a good job of stopping White from getting high point totals. I think teams have realized you should put an athletic guy who is about 6'4 - 6'6 on white and take away any ability to drive. That would force White down to the block where his game has not been developed yet. White gets reduced to having to score more garbage points which he is good at but there are not always a ton of chances for garbage point.

Agree, the floor was so damn bright I should have worn sunglasses to watch the game. I don't understand what was going on. The arean seemed kind of dark and the floor was bright as heck.

#4. The contrast was screwed up on the main game camera. I adjusted my TV and got it to look much better. Nothing helped the announcers though.
