Woodbury and Basabe

Without their effort and hustle last night, PSU wins. While neither put up big scoring numbers, I lost track trying to keep up with the number of loose balls, tips, blocks, altered shots, etc. these guys had. Both seemed determined and focused every second they were on the court. I remain baffled as to why it's OK for Oglesby to clank shot after shot, yet we refuse to feed the post to get Basabe and Woodbury touches. Conversely, I am extremely underwhelmed with McCaffrey's recruiting. If we had another shooter / scorer or another Basabe type athlete, I think we have 2-3 more wins. What did he see last year that made him think we had enough scorers on the team? Clemmons, Oglesby, Olaseni, and Ingram (who apparently was recruited to sit on the bench) collectively grade out at a D- offensively. A couple guys for specific roles OK, but 4 with a big ? about Meyer, who was recruited by nobody? Woodbury and Gesell will improve, Basabe and White will be solid, Marble may have a bit more to tap into, but the rest of the team ......not sure.

I think it is a little too soon to grade out Fran's recruiting as a D- when you are not including Gesell, Woodbury and Meyer as well. I think it is clear Clemmons was brought in to play tough defense and handle the ball, and any offense out of him is pure bonus. Olaseni still has a ton of upside and we will see it, especially if he redshirts next year as rumored. Oglesby still serves a purpose on this team to extend the defense. You can see defenses focusing on him when he is in the game because contrary to what some believe on here, most teams know that he can make shots and make alot of them if he gets hot. Fran wants him to keep shooting, so I guess I am inclined to somewhat trust the coach. Ingram came in out of shape. Probably could have redshirted, but that would have been a difficult decision with only two other true guards on the team. You say Meyer was recruited by nobody? Can't the same essentially be said for White and that has turned out pretty well wouldn't you say??? Additionally, I think you are forgetting that he basically had to re-recruit Marble and McCabe and he brought in Mel from the East Coast. He must have done enough at some point in the process to make Utoff want to leave Wisconsin and come back home to Iowa? Still want to give Fran's recruiting a D-, or is that just for last year's class? I would suggest being a little patient and let Fran's plan play out some??? If you haven't seen improvement with this team, then you haven't been watching very closely.

Fran messed up. He should have walked outside his office and plucked a scorer off the scorer-tree.

It would have been, literally, that easy.

More Harrison Barnes juco types!!

Fran clearly needs to take a page from Fred's recruiting notebook.

And a few NBA phone numbers from his Rolodex.

So Fran has done a poor job recruiting, but you start a thread about how 2 of his recruits were the key to victory last night?

Not trying to sound like a smartie, but you need to face it. Woody does not have the hand eye coordination, hand quickness and mental determination to score in the B1G. He is great at passing. I'm not ready to say he's a great rebounder yet until he does those rebound numbers AND at least is a scoring threat. It's like playing closed field baseball and really puts the team at a disadvantage offensively. A times the defense inside is non-existent when it involves pick and roll.

I can agree with you about Basabe, but not Woody. Fran obviously thinks he sees something in JO. Not sure why MG doesn't become the shooter off the screens, but that does take away ball handling.

I have been also been somewhat underwhelmed with FM's recruiting and outside of getting an unhappy Wisky player there is little to see for the future? That said, White, MG, and Basabe were great pick ups. By underwhelmed I mean for a fast turn around. Clemmons is more of a project than first thought, but not unusual for a freshman. It's going to take two more years before we really know where we are at. Staying ahead of PSU, NW and Nebby will likely be easy. Breaking into the top 1/3 isn't there with the current talent level. Some of the pieces are there. Experience will help, but you know MSU, MI, IU and Wisky will simply reload with as good or better. IU may not get such a great player for the future, but the overall talent will get better.

They would have destroyed that zone if they would have kept going to Basabe at the high post. Its not hard to defend a team that passes the ball around the three point line. Basabe needed more touches last night.

Iowa is getting exactly what they need from those 2, couldnt ask anymore of them at this stage. That 15-17 foot Basabe jumper is money, reminds me of Bill Wennington with the Bulls.

The Nuge and ILHawk going at it! It's a troll-off!!

To bad you can't notice why this team struggles to score before hurling insults. Not ask for a player to score? Ever coached? Might as well have a hand tied behind your back unless you have a bunch of other scorers.

IL, it isn't that people can't notice, it's they don't want to notice. Right now this team clearly struggles on the offensive end. They can put up points from time to time but they are not consistent at all.

He is getting pretty good at the 18 footer. He needs to look for it more often and that will open up the low post (and possibly the wing, depending on where he is getting the ball).

I notice the team struggles, I also realize how far this team has come in two and a half years and how young we are and feel pretty damn good about Fran's recruiting. I also have the common sense to realize it's not easy to find big time scorers at the college level, and it's very hard to recruit guys like that to a program that hasn't won a tournament game in over a decade. And I realize how much better having a capable outside shooter or two would make our offense look, and I think we have the personnel, between an improved MG, Jok and Uthoff, to see a big improvement there next season.

Consider that this is a team still rebuilding. 3 yrs ago this program had all but hit rock bottom. Fran is a builder of teams. He doesn't have the same strategy of building a team like say a Calipari. (for more than one reason) Schools swing and miss on recruits for various reasons all the time and when you figure this team is leaning pretty heavy on Gessell Woody and Clemmons I'm not upset at where this team is this yr. It's young, everybody will be back next yr. (minus May) It'll be interesting to see how Utoff and Jok figure in. That said more touches for Basabe Woody and even McCabe wouldn't hurt my feelings as opposed to Oglesby. The arrow for this group is pointing up not sideways or down. I'm not going to complain to the Nth degree about things.

People who expect Fran to pull McD AAs up to this point are idiots. This is his second class, what did you expect, seriously? Some people (the nuge) are idiots. Also, Woody is a 7' tall 18 year old. Do you expect him to be Greg Oden (who I really think was a 30 year old freshman) It takes time for bigger kids to develop and offense comes last, so I'm not surprised that Woody isn't putting up 10 a game, but his defense has been good. Leonard for Ill struggled as a freshman then played well as a soph. as he began to develop some offense.
