You are missing the point of what I've been saying for weeks. To win this league, to compete for NCAA tournaments, to be even in the discussion, then teams MUST win their home games or certainly more than .500 at home. No one thought (myself included) that Wisconsin was going to go undefeated in the league. We picked up 2 road games so far and have protected our home court. Because of that we are in the thick of things.
Nice win last night but it doesn't take anything away from my larger point that it comes down to what a teams record is, their strength of schedule and who they have beaten. I'm not comparing Wisconsin to Iowa, I'm trying to win a BIG title and advance to the dance again. That is the goal in Wisconsin. In a year where we lost our starting PG a week before the season, we are doing just that.
If Wisconsin ends up being a "bubble team" then that means Iowa still has very few chances to pick up resume wins. If we fall back to the pack then beating Wisconsin isn't that for you.
Yeah, I think Iowa headed into this season trying not to win the regular season conference title, that would be typical Fran McCaffery thinking.
Your point is and always has been is you believe Wisconsin is and "elite" program, which they are far from. I like the fact that you did pick Iowa to win the game, but it doesn't take away from your ideologies that Wisconsin is a better program than you believe.
Bo Ryan is a good coach, I get that and you want to be proud of your team. Here is the problem, Wisconsin is a good program, not great, average throughout their history. It has been a good run and I don't see a huge downswing for Wisconsin, but I don't see them ever being considered one of those teams that will win a National Championship. Not to say they can't go to a Final Four, but definitely not a team heading into the season to be spoken as one of those to win.
There is a lot of programs in the Big Ten that are young that still have a lot more upside than Wisconsin in the next couple of seasons. Iowa/Purdue are two that I can think of, but don't dismiss Illinois moving forward, it will take time to get the Weber out of that program, but there is still a lot of talent and Groce is recruiting well already.
It took Michigan one recruit, in Trey Burke to leap Wisconsin and I don't see Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan State falling off anytime soon.
I don't care that Wisconsin beat Indiana, I don't think Indiana will finish lower than Wisconsin either. This will be the best chance for Wisconsin to keep that foothold and not drop below fourth at the end of the conference season. Enjoy it now as I think that gap is closing rapidly and it may not be too long before Wisconsin falls a few pegs in the conference.
When I read your posts, it seems like you aren't very old and have only been watching Wisconsin basketball, or been paying attention to is since Bo Ryan has been there. In that time Iowa has went through a lot of change and their conference play has suffered from it. Times are very much changing.
