IMO, Fran's emphasis on defense (and motion offense)

Clemmons is the starting point guard for Iowa. IMO, to make Iowa's backcourt the most potent offensively, Fran should've put Marble in as the starting 2 guard. He hasn't. Marble is the starting small forward in Iowa's lineup.

IMO, Fran being apalled with Iowa's transition defense (Clemmons has some transition defense work to do as well),forced him to put Clemmons in at point. Also, when Clemmons is at point on offense, players move more, and the ball moves more.

From what I've seen thus far this season, there is no player that more effects how the team performs when he is on the court than Adam Woodbury.

Marble is more of a 3 for college ball.

Marble played the 3 last year when he wasn't playing the point. May played the 2 while Gatens was hurt and Eric said the only difference in our offense was the side of the court you are on. Fran runs an offense that works best with 3 guards.

Marble defensively matches up best at the 3. He was focused very heavily on taking Clyburn out of the game because ISU is very lopsided in their scoring. Where as Iowa is much more well balanced that he doesn't have to score. The defense is much better with this lineup because it puts all of them in a better position to play at their best. White can guard 4s (struggled with the 3s because of quickness). Marble can guard 3s (where as many 2s he isn't as quick as). Clemmons is our best on ball defender and Gesell seems more adept guarding a 2 even though he may give up height.

Offensively Clemmons is looking like BC with a much better shot. Anyone that understands basketball knows how much better the offense was last year with BC at point and Marble at the 3. Now we have a team that much more resembles that along with a much better defense. Ogelsby as Gesell's back up is solid and Gesell gets time at the point to keep Clemmons from playing too many minutes. Basabe keeps White's minutes down. Ogelsby and May can spare Marble minutes at the 3. McCabe and Basabe allow Woodbury to keep his minutes down.

I am most impressed with Woodbury's quick development. He is not getting pushed around as much as he was earlier in the year and he is facing much better posts. I think if he can play 18 to 20 minutes consistently and we can knockdown some shots I think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised by our record. I thought Woody would struggle against ISU (his first real test) and instead he flourished. Can't wait to see what he does against the B1G posts as I think he is a gamer that does better against the better competition.

Marble was also guarded by Babb Friday which is their best defender. Plus he missed shots he usually hits. And Foval's right the 2 and 3 are almost identical in fran's offense but Marble matches up to more 3's better on defense.

We shut them down inside in the second half. All they had was threes. If they hadn't made a few it would have been a 20 point loss. I like our interior D. We don't want anyone scoring in the paint, and usually have at least two players smashing the ball and or player under the basket.....

We were quick reacting to the ball the second half. Hope we can do it starting New Years Eve......
