Feeling less confident about NCAA tournament hopes

e is a solid PG I didn't say he was All Big 12, but at 9 ppg I would call it solid. It won't be the best PG that Iowa faces all year, but won't be the worst.

Terrible ball handler, he's a turnover machine. And have you seen his FG%? He only scores because he takes so many dumb shots and eventually some of them have to fall. Very selfish PG, I saw this even at MSU.

Marble is adjusting to this role nicely.. it will take a couple more games to polish this, as it takes some time to go from being a role player to the team leader.
leader on the team at 31.3 mpg
14.4 ppg up from 11.5 ppg
shooting 39 of 80 from 2 for just under 50%, last year for the season he was 117 of 263 for 44.4%
3 PT shooting 10-26 for 38.5 %, last season 22 of 56 for 39.3%. he is well on his way to being better than he was last year,
FT shooting 22-29 for 75% compared to 102 of 141 for 72.3%
the season is still just 25% completed, and Iowa still has 24 more games to play. 5 in OOC play
White and Marble are going to lead this team, together, nothing says one player has to be the leader.
as for the SR leadership that is coming from May, the little things he does., does not show up on the stat sheet. it comes from what he does in practice and how he handles himself on the court

This team is starting to come together. The move of Marble to the 3 and White to the 4 will bring dividends down the road. Having MG and AC on the court at the same time will be a good thing. Having 2 big men will be tremendous help at the 5.

Do I think they'll make the Dance? I'm still on the fence and it would be a year ahead of what I thought would be the schedule. But if they don't, the experience they are gaining this year sets up for a pretty good 2013-14 season.

Steady improvement is what I'm looking for and the Hawks are showing it.

GO HAWKS!!!

Solid post from herby.

Not even due to our team but due to the strength of the conference.

As of this morning's daily RPI on ESPN, we'll play 17 top 100 RPI teams. That is a tough road to 19-20 total wins. It is a double edged sword as we'll have every chance to prove our worth. Our OOC SOS isn't as bad as people expected, Western Kentucky is 7-2. GW isn't horrible. UNI/ISU are formidable, VT/WSU are undefeated.

I hope I'm wrong and we can continue to improve and find 9 conference wins.

I think tonight's game will tell a lot for the season.

Thoughts?

Great post and agree 100%. I just think that the passion and leader ship needs to show up in more than just the stat sheet to win tonight’s game.

That would mean that we were 6-12 or 7-11 in the conference or lost to Coppin State or South Caronlina State. No way Iowa come close to dancing wit 16 or 17 wins.

Because we're in BIG... it helps us. We can probably go dancing with 16 or 17 wins. Media loves the BIG.

I don't know about 16, but definitely with 18. And media loves BoneG, but not so much Iowa. They like schools with good basketball tradition and large fanbases, and I hate to say it, but that ain't us in the eyes of most members of the selection committee. Look at how Northwestern got screwed last year.

Yeah. This is about the time they really started finding it last year. I would actually point to halftime of the ISU game at Hilton. First half was ugly; Iowa down 20 at the break. On the heels of Clemson, Creighton, Campbell, and UNI, it really felt like the team was sinking, regressing, and heading for a 2-16 conference season (or something like that; they looked VERY bad). Second half of that game, though, Marble started finding the floater from the point, and Hawks trimmed the deficit to 10 very quickly, and although they couldn't close the rest, they looked like a more confident team thereafter.

Next couple of non-con games were blowout wins, then the down-to-the-wire game with Purdue at Carver, then HUGE win at the Kohl Center. That Wisconsin win didn't happen overnight, though. I'm looking for the next several games to yield big improvements.

If you seriously think Iowa's basketball history is ANYWHERE near Northwestern's, then you can't be helped. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Yeah. As much as we're not North Carolina or Kansas. We're closer to them than we are to a program that has never danced.

The next step in the Franimal rebuild is to defeat an in-state rival in front of packed house at CHA. I will be there and I can't wait. Go Hawks!

Yes, this is the biggest game of the year to date for the Hawks, imo.
It is time to start making Carver a pit for visiting teams, like at the end of last season, but without Matt Gatens bailing us out with his shooting.
Time to start beating teams that have some real talent, like ISU, at least in Carver.
Iowa's big win over IU in Carver last year is being shown on the BTN at 5 PM as a lead-in to the game tonite....we need that kind of effort tonite, without Matt and Bryce in our backcourt.
Luscious has not been great this season, but has gotten hot the last two games,so he might be getting on a roll. He started in the Final Four 3 years ago for MSU so he is no bum.
On paper, ISU has the edge in athleticism, experience, and pure talent....Hawks need hustle, determination, and a frenzied home crowd to have a shot tonite. Go Hawks.

Of course we're better than NW, that's a given, but the BoneG is crowded and lots of teams would get picked ahead of us because we don't have their national following (or even as strong of a regional following). I'm talking Indiana, Michigan, MSU, OSU, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Purdue (if they stop sucking).

Good grief, man. No one gets picked anymore for the NCAA tournament for "national following" purposes. Yes, the last few teams in or out get some debate, but teams that deserve to get in get in, those that don't, don't. If Iowa doesn't get into the tournament, it will be due to the resume not being good enough.
