Your view of Fran changes if the players could make shots

A lot of hammering on Fran. The players were shooting around 48%+ when they were 10-1 and 11-2 but not nearly so well the last 6 games.

It is simple, guys who were decent shooters just lost it or tighened up and couldnt hit the ocean.

Two scorers almost carried the team with some late game hustle. hawks didnt seem into the game until about 6-7 minute mark left on clock of both halves.

But Fran cant shoot for them. But he might need to recruit better shooters. I hope Bohannon can light it up

The main thing I wish Fran would do is use more timeouts to stop momentum and get something different on offense for the last couple of minutes of both halves. Otherwise he mixes defenses pretty well, calls pretty good plays out of timeouts and for out of bounds plays, he runs a good motion offense with a lot of options and plays uptempo.

He needs to get a really good big man and some faster players.

I am sure he is disappointed because this team was playing really well.

I give him 4-5 more years and then we will see.

The verdict on McCaffery was already out and just further reinforced this year. He is a great basketball mind, but also a hot head who is not a leader of men. When Iowa is winning games by double digits, there is no adversity and leadership becomes less of an issue. Unfortunately for Fran, it's impossible to win every game by double digits so his weaknesses get exposed.

What Fran really needs is a player that will/can step up on his own volition and lead the team. He just hasn't had that recruit.

I watched Buddy and Goerges last night. Niang is a punk but you can't say that he didn't step up and try to will his team to victory. The team knew enough to get him the ball and get out of the way. Granted they still lost but Buddy is the man. If Fran was just smart enough to tell the team to get the ball to Uthoff or Jok and get the hell out of the way at the end maybe we would be better late in games? I don't know but I do know that MG dribbling it around until something bad happenes doesn't work.

This team lacks a vocal leader like it did 2 years ago. 2 years ago it should've been Marble, but some kids just don't have that in them. Last year, Aaron White took on the role when I didn't think he could. He did very well with it.

This year? Nobody. Oh, also 3/5 of the starting lineup can't shoot worth a damn. There's also that.

Players aren't making shots because we don't get the wide open looks we got earlier in the season. Teams have figured out that we have no inside game and are sticking tight to our 3 pt shooters. We need Tyler Cook.

I think too many people think Tyler Cook is going to be our savior. Judging by his highlight reels he still needs to develop some post moves and a 10 foot and in shot. A lot of dunks on the video but there is more development needed. Of course, I admit, I've only seen a few minutes of video on him so take it with a grain of salt.

Er, we had two wide-open looks at the end of the Indiana game. They were the type of shots we have seen being made time and time again in the last 24-48 hours in the conference tournaments. And I promise you, they were executed flawlessly, and the people who shot those were chosen because it was felt they were the best hope both for getting open on that play and making the three. Neither was close.

What we really miss is the "clutch" factor - as we go down the stretch of a game there is someone (or several someones) who, even if they had a terrible shooting game up to that point, is absolute money when it really counts. We have anything but - every one of these guys choke up - shots aren't even hitting the rim.

Yes, we need shooters, but we need CLUTCH players. And no, I don't mean Zach McCabe-types who were more than willing to grab the ball and take that final shot, but never came close to making it. I mean guys like the player from Michigan yesterday, who hardly ever shoots threes but makes one as time expires.

All the moaning about Fran is a little over the top. These players helped Iowa get back to relevance. As did his coaching and recruiting. Maybe he has a little KF in him in that he believes a little too much in the seniors, but hey they are the girl that brought us to the dance. I like that he hates losing, show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser--right. What this teams lacks in mental toughness--I thought Sappy brought that at the beginning of the season, but his confidence has all but evaporated. CW gives is a better chance to win than Sappy right now, and here is why--CONFIDENCE and ability. For those of you who want to throw the baby out with the bath water remember TOM friggin DAVIS--in the words of Cinderella (You don't know what you got till' it gone). I think Fran knows last years recruiting class could have helped us this year with the toughness, but you have to plan for the future. Don't forget Iowa basketball in the tournament 3 years in a row now. Iowa athletics have challenges we are not Indiana or even Michigan and never will be, but with careful roster management and solid recruiting we can make a run every 3-4 years just as in football. If Dale Jones stays healthy I think this team also looks different btw. I say Fran figures some things out and we get to the round of 16--hey Dace called MU of Indy-- the other day and we all thought he was a complete Homer, but here is the thing if Iowa can get Sapp or CW to nut up we win games it is as simple as that. Iowa needs to win with toughness--I think some of these Chicago kids coming up will bring that Moxy.

What?!
No Captain Obvious, reference, yet?

hahaha, yeah call me captain obvious but if the subject of the thread is so obvious why is everyone bashing Fran?

I hope bohannon and some other players coming in or young ones on the roster are not like an Oglesby who shoots great in practice but avg to poorly in games. Coaches see players practice well and they play them but some players are gamers.

No excuses here as some shots lately have been beyond bricks and more like boulders.

I like Baer's stroke and I think is big problem lately is hurrying his shot which he will learn not to do by getting in the really good shooting triple threat position and stepping into the catch of the pass.

I did not see enough of Christian W shooting so I cannot say. Who on this site knows if CW has a good shot.

Well, Iowa certainly needs a 3rd scorer besides just Uthoff and Jok. That ILL game was brutal from the rest of the team.

But, I still look back at that game and think that if Iowa could make lay ups (thought they missed at least 5) and not give up so many wide open 3's, they win that game by double digits.

^^ totally true, they played poorly in all these latest losses but still could have won them
