Surprised that major media hasn't picked up on this story, especially with all the focus on South American countries being "safe havens" for Snowden. Makes me wonder if it is really true. Or maybe I just missed it.
A great deal of the racism was scrubbed out of the comments on that article. Still a bunch of people saying that Brazil should not be hosting the World Cup because of this. I mean, why not punish the entire country for the actions of a group of people in a rural, amateur match. Obviously it's indicative of the rest of the culture.
If you think the culture of Brazil is one that shouldn't be hosting because of this...there are a lot of soccer cultures that have had incidents like this. People get killed, or used to on a regular basis in Europe for a variety of reasons. There are multiple cases where fans have been stampeded because of the culture of soccer.
It is funny how people talk about how violent some sports are, but don't ever talk about soccer, it is more the fans, but it is one of the most violent riddled and corrupt sports in the world.
i think it was the 1994 world cup - one of columbia's players scored an 'own goal' and he was later murdered in the streets of columbia......
there is a espn 30 for 30 show on him - the 2 escobars, or something like that....

That was the same one...I am amazed at how many stories show up when you put in Soccer death...I didn't think it was quite that bad.

The linked story discusses the possibility that he was killed by drug cartels or betting mafioso who had big money riding on the outcome of the game, then added:
In the match against the US in Pasadena on 23 June, Escobar stretched to cut out a cross from the left but instead stabbed the ball past his own goalkeeper for the opening goal. In a normal game, it would have looked like bad luck. In the context of Colombia, where betting on football is like horse-race betting in Britain, there was just a suggestion that he should have been able to steer the ball wide for a corner. For the rest of the game the Colombians continued to play below form.
Interesting take. Watch the replay and see whether you feel the own-goal was an accident or something else.
