Wyoming Coaches to Copy Hawks Defense

"n Sharing notes — The Wyoming defensive coaching staff — Marty English, Mike Fanoga, Jerry Montgomery and Alex Grinch — are off to Iowa City this weekend to meet with the Iowa coaching staff and compare notes. The Cowboys will convert from the 3-4 to a 4-3 this spring."

Mountain West shake up could follow Pac-10 expansion | Laramie Boomerang | Laramie, Wyoming

I think they realize who the best defense to copy from is...

Jerry Montgomery - is this the same Jerry Montgomery who played for Iowa? That could very well be the reasoning as well.

Nice find, beaver.

I'm sure Jerry Montgomery's ties had something to do with this. And our dominant Orange bowl performance. They can learn a lot from Norm and the gang.

I still hope to see Jerry's career lead him back to Iowa City. I know he and Natalie would love to move back.

I like an aggressive attacking style defense, but with the type of athletes Iowa can bring in this is the perfect defense. It took 2 or 3 years after KF/Parker got here to buy in, I am completely all in now. My only suggestion would be either find the best strength and conditioning coach on the planet and pay him accordingly or pay your current strength/conditioning coach like a coordinator.

Those ready made NFL d-lineman you see all over SEC are not going to make their way to Wyoming. You are going to have to convert slow linebackers and undersized high school lineman into beast and that takes a good strength and conditioning coach.

Your CB(s) need decent speed not great speed in this system.....They just have to be good in run support, good tacklers. Same with the linebackers.

It is not a very complicated system to run.......easy to find players to fit this system......They just have to be smart and disciplined.

yeah the same Jerry. He also coached UNI's D line for a few years before going to WY.

Jerry Montgomery is a very astute observer.

Iowa Defensive coaches are definitely a proven, special group.

While Iowa does not always have the national recruiting success that Ohio St, USC, or Florida do, the Iowa Defense the past couple years especially has been better than almost any team in college football.

I'll take Iowa's defense's performance up against any College FB program in 2009. You have to remember, our offense was statistically only about top 90 in the BCS team rankings. That means our defense carried us in quite a few games, as most people realize.

Always loving the defense and hating on the offense. Our offensive statistics are not relevant. Period. We run a ball control, field position, pro-style offense with the goal of not hanging the defense out to dry or leaving the defense on the field too long. It simply is not fair to compare our offense to Boise State, Cincinnatti or a significant number of other teams in Division I because our offense, especially if we have a lead, places a different emphasis on priorities than other teams. If these fellas from Wyoming think they can go into their crappy little conference and just adopt our defense without the proper offensive balance that a Maestro like Ken O'Keefe brings, they will leave their defense out to hang and they will curse the day they met Norm Parker. It's a team philosophy, not just a defensive strategy that has won us a lot of games in the past decade.

Fantastic post.

You make some good points, but you can't completely ignore where we finish offensively each year. This offensive can put up points and stats if run effectively. Look at 2001 and 2002, these were years with great offensive talent across the board (oline and skill positions).

hmm...could Jerry be setting himself up for a hire after Norm Retires in 20 years?

Can't tell if you are trying to say you want Norm to be here forever or you think he will retire in the next 2 years. If it is the latter my money is on Phil Parker taking that spot.

Exactly, chadfrey.

Maybe keefer4prez can give a report on who is immitating our offense.

details at 10?

You're right, everyone in the NFL is running the same offense as Boise, Cinci and the other college teams that were statistically ranked 1st through 10th last year. I guess we should play follow the leader, too, in the hopes we can find a gem of an offensive coordinator, like Mike Schultz who was at TCU in 2008 and showed Big Ten defenses how potent those tricky offenses can be while managing to help the Illini win 3 games in 2009. Yep, that's what I want, fire O'Keefe and bring in an offensive guru, like Mike Schultz.

See, that's the issue right there... don't need to find a GEM of an OC, just an upgrade over the current stiff we have. Can't find an "Iowa" guy? He's in Kansas (Chuck Long) this year- missed the boat on that one!

Actually, keefer4prez.............I'm not saying a thing about the OC. The OC is doing okay, heck we're a Top 10 football team. However, I have to ask what this team would have done this year had it had a bit more offensive punch, at key times. And unfortunately, the overall offensive stats being toward the bottom of the conference and below 50 in the nation, cannot be ignored, entirely. Fortunately, we did find enough offense at very important moments, like @ MSU, vs IN in 4th quarter and the tremendous showing at the Orange Bowl.

Long was a complete bust at San Diege St. ; predicting more of the same with the Jayhawks.

Great points- i don't think anywhere in the book of Iowa Football Philosophy does it say have a smothering "D" to make up for an inept offensive coordinat... er i mean scheme. (OK, reaching a bit here:) )

I knew this would happen eventually.
Why? Because after winning 8 national championships with the Hawkeyes, I accepted a position at Wyoming and proceeded to win 2 more there using the Iowa playbook. My Playstation never lies, especially with NCAA Football '99 spinin' :)
