Wundergrape's Thoughts On Alford

I believe Steve Alford is an egotist of the highest order. That is just an observation as I have heard a lot of other stories about him in Iowa City that have already been mentioned here. He hasnt directly affected me I suppose so I dont like or dislike him from a personal point of view.

But when people like him are supposedly religiously righteous then pull the kind of crap he did in the PPierce case etc I just really am glad he was gone at Iowa.

Gee, I'd have thought him signing a 10 year contract less than two weeks ago would have made him a scumbag.

Alford made a serious error in judgement 11 years ago, and was widely thought of as an *** around Iowa City. That said, his tenure in New Mexico seemed to be free of any controversy at all.

Maybe so, but character is revealed during times of crisis, not hidden. Alford's actions showed his true character and until he publicly admits he handled it poorly, I will believe his character has not changed.

Don't get it twisted, I'm hardly defending him. I think the guy is grade-A phony. I also think that by going after Alford for something that happened a decade ago, Bernstein is picking low hanging fruit.

Very, very, low hanging fruit. It is unfortunate that it is ignored by a storied institution like UCLA.

If I'm Guerrero, I am on the phone with Alford right now and I am *telling* him how to handle this. Be humble, admit mistakes were made, admit you have learned a lot since those days.

Just curious, and out of fairness... did Alford ever do that, whether in IC or later? If so I don't remember it.

Come on guys/gals lets be fair, ok4p is on 4 pages with his "thoughts", we need to give wundergrape our input.

I'm with Grape and reading the link is a reminder of how fortunate we are Alford is gone...yet how unfortunate it is that he is still employed as a head basketball coach. This is the role model some parents want for their young adult children (D-1 players that sign wherever Alford coaches)? Sad!

Side Note: I haven't read a word in the referenced 4 page thread. If I want to know a 2nd grader's thoughts on anything I'll talk to 1 of the neighbor kids. Also, quantity doesn't equal quality.

I've got no personal animosity toward Alford. However, I didn't approve when they hired him and I was OK with it when he left.

Now that he's twice removed in his coaching career from UI and still has this many people commenting on him, (myself included) I guess he will always be a part of the conversation here.

dammit Windsor, you owe me a keyboard! Coffee came out of my nose and all over everything. :D

I worked for facilities back when Alford was there. He was an a**, plain and simple. Treated everybody, secretaries, managers, etc. like crap. Reminds me of former Illinois gov. Rod Blagoyevich. Thought he was something every time he walked into a place, show was all about him. What's that saying, You meet the same people coming down as you did going up. He will get what's coming to him. Should have stayed where he was. He will last 3 seasons and be done.
