Would this be happening if college football had a playoff?

I wonder if this would all be happening if college football had a playoff system instead of a bowl. One of the big argumens the NCAA rattles off in the bowl v playoff discussion is tradition. How ironic if thier alleged feelings regarding tradtion is ultimately lead to the breakdown of the traditional conferences.

Of course you could argue that this is happening to make 4 16 team "superconferences" to set up a 4 team tournament to determin a national title game as well.

I just think that if there were some sort of playoff system in place none of this would be happening.

I'd read an article recently, wish I could remember where, talking about how if the Big 12 had simply given the thumbs up for the Plus One, none of this would probably be happening.

This is all happening for one simple reason:

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The Big Ten effectively cut out the middle-man when they created the BTN and it started a huge cash infusion into the B10 schools. Every other university is looking with envy and now they are all looking to expand as without that breadth and size, they can't command the same types of revenue deals the B10 has. In a word, it's all about MONEY.

I think we'll get a playoff out of it in the long run, but that is a side benefit.
