Woodbury's TO with 1.7 secs left in game.

Does anyone have any insight on the benefit of calling a TO with 1.7 secs on the clock? Was Woodbury more confident in Iowa being able to throw the ball in bounds than make a free throw? I am curious what others think of that decision.

It was briefly discussed in another thread but I think he just did it so we would have the chance to inbound it and get it in the hands of a guard/better FT shooter.

I think if it was done with 3-5 seconds left it was was a good idea. He actually could have thrown the ball to the other end of the court and ran out the clock. He was probably just a little off on how much time was left in his head.

That would make more sense. I just don't like the idea of giving the other team a chance to set up a defense and stealing the ball without us getting at least a free throw attempt to seal the victory.

Iowa was in the double bonus, so it would've been 2 FT's. And if both were missed, UNC would've had to go the length of the court anyway. Make either, and it's a moot point with a 4 point lead. A better FT shooter than Woody would've been a good thing of course, but in the end, it didn't matter.

I wonder if Woody didn't just react and call TO to secure possession more than anything else, rather than a case of his thinking "I can call timeout and we'll have the chance to inbound to a better FT shooter". Who knows, but that seems like rather quick thinking to make on the spot like that.

It was clearly a knee-jerk reaction to the end of game situation, prolly cuz they're so used to having to score from behind in the situation, a time out is automatic.

It was a little scary when I saw we had no time outs left. I wonder if Fran told the inbounder to just throw it to the other end of the court if it came down to getting a 5 second call.

I actually liked him calling a TO. Get the ball into a better ball handler.
Felt better about inbounding on the side, then underneath UNC's basket.

I liked the call at the time. If you give those guys another split second, maybe the get a jump ball call, or simply strip the ball from him on their side of the court. This way, worse case scenario (if you can't get it in to a guard) you throw the end bounds pass to the other end of the court, and make them steal it, and throw up a full court shot to try to tie.

I think he did it so he could enjoy the victory on the floor of the dean dome an extra minute

I thought it was a panic call. Poor decision. In the end it didn't matter. But using the last timeout which forces us to make an inbounds play risking a 5 second TO with only a 3 point lead on the road is a tad bit risky. It turns out, UNC came out and did not defend the inbound pass with near the intensity I was expecting, and we still got the W.

Dolph sounded puzzled about the play. And his commentary was puzzling for segments of that game so the TO really threw him off.

It was just his reaction to running down that rebound outside the 3 pt line. He was in no mans land for him and he just didn't know what was on the clock. Cause he could have just tossed the ball in the air down the court and game over or I would have been fine with him just wrapping both arms around it and taking a foul. I have all the confidence in the world he'd have made 1 of 2 at least. I'm just glad Iowa had a TO left and he didn't pull a Webber... NC would have ate that up..

Woodbury was probably just reacting to the circumstances than trying to figure out option A,B, and C. He looked pretty happy when he was calling the timeout.
