Woodbury and Gesell at Pangos AA Camp

Woodbury would be a huge get, but there was a stretch there where Gesell took the game over. You can't teach size, but Gesell is just ball savvy. Getting the ball up the court quick and knows when to drive or pull up. I would put him more at a priority right now than Woodbury.

Thank you for the Video. I have been asking for more video on Gesell. He really does look like one of those Iowa gym rat kids, who finds ways to overcome their deficiencies - in his case being vertically challenged. Although he finishes WAY below the basket, he seems to have found ways to sneak the ball to the hoop, ala Dean Oliver. And yes, he did take the game over.

He will have to do most his damage on defense by anticipating.

Woodbury on the other hand just looks like the real deal all over. Moves well, has some post moves and a nice baby hook that will translate well, nice outlet passing.

The combination really does seem like an ideal duo for Iowa.

Um yea, whomever said MG is not a PG hasn't watched him play. Could he be better, certainly, but he carved them up pretty good.

actually i was shocked that gesell looked so short in this video because i have seen clips of him throwing down big time dunks. this was an elite camp so there must have been some serious size on the floor.

i was told at one point that he was nearly a 7-foot high jumper but i dont have any confirmation of that.

It would be awesome if you could help with links of Gessel dunking. The only two clips I have seen are the April 2011 and this one, which basically show him finishing the same way.

i dont have them handy but i can tell you they were from last season via a sioux city area newspaper or tv station. sorry.

Good lord that is some terrible basketball. Only was able to watch a few minutes. Talented kids, yes. Bad basketball, double yes.

gesell comes in around the 8 minute mark and plays much of the rest of the game. you can skip ahead 10 seconds at at time.

Thanks! I will skip ahead. If you know/find any specific plays to check out, do pass that along please...

It does look like some sloppy bball, at first. Haven't seen much tho. I think it is early in the AAU circuit tho. Plus some of these guys haven't played together.

Agreed 9yr. Big men in that setting can only draw attention by blocking shots. They are not getting into the offense.

Thanks to the OP for the links and I agree with bpierce, that is some bad ball. Lazy or no defense combined with guys taking awful shots. Woodbury with a nice turnaround early on...like that he didn't hesitate. Gessel with some nice handles and no fear driving to the rim. Hard to see what Woodbury is capable of given the back and forth bad shots. He spent most of his time running from free throw line to free throw line while guys jacked shots up.

For big men in these settings, you really just want to see the little things like outlet passing, movement, the ability to do certain things on O. Like that really nice quick no hesitation baby hook. The biggest issue is his movement. He moves really well for a guy his size. No wonder hens shooting up boards.

Really is very, very bad basketball.

You could tell there was alot of guys pretty frustated by it as well.

Yes, the pathetic lack of defense in this type of game does not give one much to go on...mostly drives to the hoop,so cannot even see how good a shooter anyone is...but;

1. Woodbury moves very well for a kid over 7ft1'',and catches the ball well..two huge factors for any big man. Looked to have soft touch on his jump hook,an absolute must for any true big man. Still thin, but looks stringy-strong...still I presume he can bulk up by 2013...definitely is a recruit that Iowa needs to lock down.

2. Gesell is as described above...gym rat kid who can just ball...kind of like that MSU guard,Drew Neitzel from a few years ago who ended up playing both pg and sg.. a player. Gesell would be a winning type of player,imo...that we could use in an Iowa uni also.

Overall, these two really look like a pair of local recruits who Iowa needs to find a way to get. They probably have better fundamentals than many of the other guys in that game,so will translate to college ball well.
But, watching that game, is there any doubt why kids at this level of talent would never consider playing Lickball? And that Lick would hardly bother attending games like this...he would need to bring a barf bucket.

I would play lick ball before what was on that video any day. I rarely play in a pickup game that is that bad.
