Woke up this morning

And almost forgot the Hawks even had a game today. This from a guy who even on the night before road games can't sleep. I have lived and breathed Iowa athletics for my entire 30 years. Yet after this debacle of a football season, I guess I have the same attitude as the players.

My son is named Christopher Michael, after Chris Street, who I personally knew. I have another child on the way, and if it's a boy, his name will be Nile or Hayden (got the old lady talked into that). My basement is black and gold with more memorabilia than you can imagine. And some friends have never seen me wear anything other than Hawkeye gear.

I can't help but wonder, if I am to this point, there must be other? It's not even the record. I have been there cheering this team to the end through losing seasons, through a 1-11 campaign and when it seemed we would never be back. But this is different. Those teams battled. They fought. This years version of the Hawkeyes flat out quit. Players and coaches both. And I can't accept that.

When my son asks why our DL is quitting, and not even trying to go after the QB anymore, what do I tell him? When Clayborn comes out after the game and says they lost their will to win, what do I tell him? It's hard to explain to an 11 year old why they should continue to never give up, when the players and coaches he idolizes, who get large paychecks and free rides to college with the chance to go on to make millions, just plain fold when the going gets tough.
