Wirfs, Epenesa

Not saying I believe any of this but found it interesting for sure.....

Here are a few updates from Iowa.

Sources close to the program tell me they still believe Tristan Wirfs will return to school after the season, despite being graded as a top half of round one prospect. I’m told the situation is similar for A.J. Epenesa- the feeling around the program is Epenesa will be back in 2020. While this may change, Iowa has done a good job of retaining highly rated underclassmen in the past; sometimes to the detriment of the player (think Desmond King).

Epenesa is an interesting case. Some people were surprised when I left him out of the first round in my recent mock draft. Yet, when speaking to sources, the feeling is Epenesa is not having a good season and it’s in his best interest to return.

They must have not been paying attention the last 2 years. Iowa's program has been gutted by 6 guys leaving early.

The Wirfs one definitely makes zero sense to me. If you're a projected 1st rounder you gotta go. Especially as an OLineman.

While hock is delighted with the money, I'll bet millions that emotionally he wishes he was with the Hawkeyes this season.

Top half of round 1!!! A top 16 pick in the NFL!!!!. Probably 5 to 10 million guaranteed or something like that.

A player should go in that situation.

Some people think the world revolves around money, some people don't give two shits about money, and some people fall somewhere in between those two. You saying they should leave is just you saying what you prioritize is what everyone else should prioritize too.

What if Wirfs, AJE, Stone, Jackson and Gholston all stay? So my expectations should be what? 7-5. You know KF and expectations don't always mix.:) I'm joking, just kidding around.

In all seriousness, I hope all these dudes come back(selfishly). Despite a ton of frustration this year, the program does feel like it is on a upward trajectory.

Ha, I think that is funny and not really on point by projecting what I might think. You actually think Wirfs has no thougths about playing pro football and getting himself in the best possible situation he can in the pros. Yes I can understand guys like Clayborn who played his senior season because his mom almost insisted he get his degree. And iirc Desmond King stayed for a family decision. I dont know about Wirfs situation but if he in reality is projected that high in the draft and he can get his degree at any time then why not go pro. I am just always suspicious of all these mock draft reports, I dont go out of my way to read them, just leery when you think of all these top college teams with top linemen that the real draft might not turn out like you think.

Maybe Wirfs will graduate by this May and he is finishing his 3rd year of starting.

here's the deal though, what if you are projected to go to Miami, Cincinnati, or one of the other floundering organizations? Maybe it makes sense to come back a year and have a chance at a better situation. How many guys have come out that are a sure thing and they get stuck with a garbage franchise and go nowhere and are out of the league in a few years. There is so much more to it than just money in my opinion.

Look at Hockenson today he had zero catches and very few targets, I would guess he isn't having a great time in Detroit. Maybe it would have been different had he stayed, maybe not but it would be interested to see if he has any doubts.

People say you can always go back to school. You sure can but you can't go back and be on the sidelines with your friends and relive that experience, so for some that may outweigh leaving early. It is a difficult decision no doubt. I think if we can retain all those underclassmen we could have a pretty special team.

There's a huge monetary incentive to go. On the other hand if he loves college ball and wants to stay, I doubt if you can force him to go pro.

I hope all the underclassmen stay and use all their eligibility up as a hawk. But if you have a level head on your shoulders and have a chance to make 20 million in about 4 years or so you can do so much good with that money. Start a foundation, help people, do all kinds of great things.

Gotta say, Wirfs should go - his counterpart was hurt half the year and that probably hurt his draft stock.

AJE is a first or second rounder, and likewise should go, for the same reason.

Stone looks ready, but I think he could increase his stock. Gholston should probably go. I don't think he can increase his stock any more.

From a team perspective, why would you stay? You have a first year QB and there isn't any help coming on the interior line. The offense is likely to be worse, and so the record will likely be 7 - 5. You aren't going to accomplish much more as a team in a rebuilding year.

Yeaaaa...I pretty much disagree with your entire last paragraph. We return every WR, RB and TE. Petras shouldn't be a downgrade from Stanley. Britt should be an upgrade over Paulsen. We only lose Ojemudia in the defensive backfield but will have Brents back. Our defensive line is almost always solid. I don't see 2020 as a rebuilding season.

I think AJ could have a great Sr year, sort of a revenge tour sort of thing. He had some big moments, but disappeared in others. Needs to work on run stuff.

Yeah I don't see 2020 as a rebuilding year either.
I think each and every one of them can improve their stock.
That de from OSU is getting a ton of hype. That's the kind of hype and year you need.
Plus I think these guys are enjoying college life, so there is obviously room to improve and raise your stock and if you enjoy doing it..... kind of a no brainier.

I will believe it when I see it. I can almost believe AJ would like to stay because he has been a life long Hawk.

The amount of money they are putting at risk as first rounders is crazy lotto money. And besides the huge bonus is the huge paycheck every month.
