Wimps

Im not sure who it was, but whoever asked the first question hit KF between the eyes immediately. Very first question was if GD would be back, KF said as far as he knows. 2nd question from him was what has GD done this year to justify him being back next? Ferentz gave a smart *** answer and that was that.

I'm starting to see that it really doesn't matter what you ask Kirk. There were a few good ones yesterday, but Kirk always starts with "Well, I'd go back to 200? when (insert something that happened 10 years ago)" He spins his answers around so much that by the time the reporter realizes Kirk didn't even attempt answering the question, he's already listening to next question. The only thing missing from his answers is Kirk giving the reporter a quick wink.

I've been there. Iowa sports media live in a bubble and are afraid to be locked out of it by the coaches or the schools if they get too rough with their questions or stories. They are afraid to ask the coaches tough questions and follow up with hard facts when the coaches start blowing smoke or lapsing into coach-speak. Reporters could have hammered Ferentz yesterday with a series of tough questions about this year's offense, using nothing other than season-end stats.

It's not just Ferentz, but Iowa's sports scribes are more deferential to him than to other coaches. No way would Ferentz survive in a larger media market.

I think the problem lies with KF and the U of I. They control who is allowed at the press conferences. The media members have to receive a pass. Maybe Jon or anyone in the media can verify that but from what I have read that if KF or the U of I doesn't like the line of questioning in such, they can revoke the access of either that person or the media group. I am pretty sure that Rob on Insider had an issue after the whole "DJK being black balled by Kirk from the NFL" question was asked. I don't think he did get his access revoked but I think it was probably threatened. Can't ask any questions if you can't attend the press conference.

Same reason the tools on the Sunday political shows never ask tough follow up questions: They are cowed by (perceived) power, and they deathly afraid of being denied future access.

Duder, the first question out of the gate was would gd be back? I thought they pushed it a little bit at this presser.

Baby steps grasshopper. But they did actually ask that question as well. Very soon after the first question they asked something like what has he done in the last four months that would lead to retaining him. Something to that effect. Do they did ask that too

Next (third) question should have been something to the effect of: "Coach, offensively you ranked second to the last in the conference in total offense for the season and 113th in Division 1-A; only 11 Division 1 teams in the country were worse on offense than you were. You averaged only 310 yards of total offense per game, the 22 touchdowns you scored was the lowest in the conference, and rushing-wise you were at the bottom of the conference. This was during a year when Greg Davis made his debut as your offensive coordinator; he had an experienced senior quarterback, experienced tight ends and receivers to work with, and yet the team was at or near the bottom when it came to offensive output. What makes you think Greg Davis will be able to improve offensive production next season?"

If you asked this question, there is no doubt in my mind that kurt's response would be "too long didn't listen LOL".

I agree. I am all for questions like that and honest candid responses.
