Will Settles join bball staff?

I know I'm just piling on the "back to Iowa roots" discussions of how the new regime is handling things and it may be common knowledge that Settles will have some coaching role (I admit complete ignorance as I am not "connected" in any way) but I had to share this exciting sighting - I was (still am) sitting in Capanna (across from the Sheraton in IC) and saw Fran and Jess walk by deep in conversation.

Hoping this leads to good things!

It would be a great thing for Jess Settles to be involved with Iowa MBB in some capacity. He is a great guy.

If so, I'd have to think it'd be in the GA role. In some ways, this makes sense. If Horner hasn't been named GA yet, given his credentials, seems like there must be some pretty prominent candidates out there.

I have a hard time seeing Settles getting the third assistant position over Bowen. Seems like it would have been the other way around, with Bowen as third assistant and Settles as video coordinator.

If Fran ends up with Settles as GA, Bowen as video coordinator, and Rodell Davis as the third assistant, I may have to buy season tickets. I live in Seattle.

Thinking about this more, Settles must have a couple masters degrees already. Given his 11 years as part of the program, perhaps he is qualified to serve as third assistant?

Regardless, the most interesting aspect about the search for the remaining assistants is how strong Fran's credibility is right now.

I'd love to see Horner or Settles or Rodell be hired in some capacity, but if they aren't, I will automatically assume that whoever Fran hired is an awesome choice.

He can do no wrong right now.

Not sure if I could contain my joy if Davis were hired as the 3rd assistant.

Could see Jess getting the 3rd assistant job over Bowen. He probably needs the increase in pay between the video coordinator spot and the 3rd assistant more than Bowen does. That said, if it would be possible to get him on as the GA and then hire a Webster/Rodell for the 3rd assistant, that would be a coup.

I have to think Settles would be the GA, if any position. Or possibly there will be a related staff position opening (DBO??).

I dont think Settles has been involved in coaching except for the last part or recent HS season as a volunteer. That would make it difficult to hire him as 3rd assistant over some other applicants. I would love to see him involved with program in some way but not sure if possible right now.

I love Jess...Ryan too....but why we need an all-Iowa staff of assistants makes no sense to me at all. When Speraw was hired I thought that would satisfy the thirst for ex-Iowa players as AC's. Give me a recruiter connected to "somewhere" that produces major talent and I see a lot more logic than hiring every ex-Iowa player who would like to work as an asst.

Fwiw, Jess does have at least one MA degree, as he is a HS teacher.

A MA degree is in no way a requirement for being a HS teacher.

The GA and third assistant don't need to have Iowa ties. But I can't recall many GAs in the last 25 years being memorable or having visibility. I think Keno Davis and Speraw served in this role at one time, along with others who went on to be successful, but generally none of these guys were real noteworthy before being GAs.

Having a Horner or a Settles as GA would be pretty impressive.

And having Rodell Davis as third assistant, not only because of his Hawkeye ties, but more his Chicago connections and Big East experience, would be beyond impressive.

Not saying he'll take the position, but I find it difficult to come up with a better fit for the University of Iowa for the remaining assistant position than Rodell Davis.

The hires so far have been great!! but have to agree that we dont necessarily have to bring in more alumnus. If we do and that's who Caff wants great!! I'd be pleased to get Horner or Jess as GA and let the coach get a recruiter from an urban area or that has a kid already in his pocket.

I have faith in whoever Fran hires, whether it be Horner for GA and Settles for the 3rd, I have no problem the man has already tabbed a veteran head coach for an assitant and whatever the 3rd lacks experience/skills im sure Speraw can make up for.

I like that Fran is embracing Iowa's basketball history in his booster talks and building his program, but I really want to see him put together the best staff possible that best addresses our needs considering the state of the program. If that means putting another former Iowa player on the staff, fine. But the priority needs to be having the best people in place to do the job, regardless of past affiliations.

That's a helluva roadie, SL...fortunately you'd only have to do that twice per week, at the most and sometimes only once!:D

And forego his last 3 years of eligibility? I think not.
