Will Norm Retire?

Will Norm retire after this year?

Absolutely not. Phil Parker would be promoted within anyway. Ferentz doesn't like change. This would provide little change as possible.

So your saying the University of Iowa will allow Norm to walk when he wants? I mean they are the ones paying him. I'm sorry I just don't buy that at all and if that happens he better be taking a larger pay cut and one much bigger than the what he took a few years back.

If Norm cares about this program and KF he would do the right thing. We all know what that is.

All that said Norm returns in 2012

No one said that but yes, Kirk is not going to force Norm to retire. I doubt Barta will tell Norm to fire him either.

Norm is gone - the guy is selfless and he knows that accommodations have been made for him that are to the detriment of the program.

That being said, I don't think he gets a gold watch and is never heard from again. He'll get a post within the athletic department. He's immensely popular and a great speaker.

This is what I've been thinking.

I don't see why we can't figure out that the Defense has not been the problem at Iowa. First time in 5 years we haven't had a top ten defense. Yes his inability to go out and recruit for physical reason can't help and yeah it would be a good time for him to step aside. But get this through your heads right now. Norm Parker Has been the crutch that Kirk Ferentz has leaned on for 12 years. When he's gone, forget about it. FORGET ABOUT IT.

Ferentz did go outside to get Soup though. I still can't believe that happened.

I wonder if Ferentz saw enough last season when Norm was out to realize maybe he needs to go outside to get a replacement as well. Or, perhaps he feels a guy from within could get it done if he had more of a chance.

Personally, I like Norm and hope he's coaching here for the next couple of years.

I don't understand why everyone believes this. Yes, Ferentz has been loyal to an extent in the past, but he's never had to replace a coordinator before. I don't think we as fans can really make any sort of guess about what he would do if Norm retired. There isn't a true precedent from which we can truly assess the situation. I believe he would do his best to hire the best person for the team. If he believes that hiring from within is best for the team, I think that's what he'll do. If he believes that making a splash hire on a DC is better for the program, I could see him doing that.

It isn't the defense, but that doesn't mean that Norm shouldn't retire. That said KF and KOK should be very, very, very happy Norm was here. It is his Defense's that has IMO gotten this program where it is today. KF owes alot to Norm and that is a FACT!! It has allowed the conservatisim of KOK and KF to exist..

It won't bother me to have Norm around.

I would have preferred the poll question be "Should" not "Will". I love Norm and what he has meant to our team. Not having your coach on the sideline to encourage, teach or give you a good *ss chewing is not the best scenario for a college football team. The reality is we all grow old and will eventually have challenges - health or otherwise - that will preclude our ability to perform at the high level that is needed in our chosen field. Then it is is time to step away and that time is now for Norm. The question of who replaces him is another issue that will generate even more speculation than this Norm discussion.

I'm really surprised that more people don't realize that our game day philosophy makes our defensive stats look better and our offensive stats look worse. I wish someone would take the time to figure out how our offense and defense ranks in points and yards PER POSSESSION. Since our philosophy is to limit the number of possessions per game, that is a stat that would really show how are offense and defense rank. More then likely they would probably rank pretty close to the same

Accurate.

Now you sound like an Alford defender. I'll never forget people saying how our %points scored per possession made us such a great team.

Look at the frigging time of possession and explain to me how our slow methodical offense with a time of possession of 22mins helps control the ball and our defense?

Read my post again and think about it for a minute. If you don't see that fewer possessions per game makes defensive stats look better and offensive stats look worse then i don't know what to tell you. You are going off 1 game with that stat. I'm talking about the last 13 years

I'm going off of 12 years of Ken okeefe football. Look at our time of possession the years we struggle. The only way I see us limiting possessions is by being inadequate on offense and forcing opponents to nickel and dime us to score. Keep eveything in front. You say we limit possessions. I say our offense stinks and has for 12 years. I say our defense being a top 10 defense 6 out of 12 years as being legit. This isn't basketball. You don't control the game by snapping the ball at the last second. You control it by getting first downs and then playing tough defense. I don't know what you're smoking but if you're in PC (prairie city) I'm about 10 mins away and wouldn't mind some.

Think about last year. We had the 7th ranked scoring defense. Meanwhile, Rick Stanzi was 7th in the country for qb rating. With a stat like that, we should be a scoring machine and Big ten champ right? No, because the offensive scheme does not work even if executed properly. There's no fudging 13 points a game. 13 points/ game means your offense just has to be average to have a great year and yet we go 7-5. This year we do the same with a 1400 yard back. The all-time Iowa receiving record holder and a pretty good QB. Year in year out, our defense gets put in horrible situations and yet time and time again, bails the team out. I'm reminded of Wisconsin 2004. Drew Tate throws 2 first half picks in our own territory and the defense holds both times. This year our defense wasn't loaded with NFL talent and because of it, we were lucky to win 7 games. Lucky because even with most of the talent on offense, the offense once again couldn't get it done. Has the offense ever carried this team? We are so used to dominant offense and lackluster offense, it becomes common and we build defense mechanisms around all of it to justify it. The offense is a joke and always has been. 2002 we had 8 nfl players on offense and were 28th in the country offensively. If not scoring, means controlling the game, then okeefe and kirk ferentz are geniuses.

Mark my words, when we don't and won't have great defenses, we will be bottom of the big ten consistently.
