Why not Steve Forbes?

Yes, he hasn't been a head coach at the D-1 level, but that might be the only case you can make against him.

He has coached at the JUCO level, and was successful.

He has great recruiting track record at a number of schools, including Tennessee and Texas A&M.

He would play the up-tempo (I'm assuming) brand of basketball that we are all severely craving.

He is a native Iowan. Destination job.

Here is a quote from Bruce Pearl on Forbes.
"Most recruiters are simply that--bring in talent every year, and then go back out on the road. But Steve is different. His strengths are the relationships and levels of trust he's able to build with our student-athletes. He is a complete coach."

Gotta say, with the rumors of relationship problems from our former coach. That would be a breath of fresh air.

Here is his bio, check it out.

I think he would be a great hire, but no one really is talking about him. He may get a shot after the first ten say no. I played for him and he always had aspirations to be a big time coach. He hasn't linked been to any big time openings before an would be a ferentz type hire...outta left field.

The negative will be no Division 1 head-coaching experience. But that is not a huge deal to me. Coaching is rocket science, and I think an assistant can pick up "head coach" skills just by being around the game. I like that Forbes has really worked his way up the basketball coaching ladder. He has had a lot of different jobs, at a lot of different levels, working with a lot of different coaches.

This means his network is large, at a variety of different levels. He has seen the good/bad of many coaches. He has seen how other coaches interact with players, recruit, build programs, coach X & O's. This all adds to the depth of experiences and influences he would bring and how he would build a program. By contract Alford was always the "head man" and never really worker or learned from others. And Lick spent his entire life learning the "Butler Way" being indoctrinated by one specific and inflexible approach to basketball.

If the man has the skills and personality for the job, presents Barta with a concrete vision/plan for how he will build and market the program, then I have no problems with him being the next coach.

Sucessfull Division 1 experience is a must and you should expect nothing less. Otherwise hire Ross Perot
