Why not Neari ?

OK so I just watched the game a second time and aside from a defensive steal by Lickliter I guess I am really starting to wonder why Neari doesn't at least get a chance when the game is obviously out of reach. I know he is a walk-on but so is John and although he certainly hasn't been around the system as long we aren't even talking about him needing to run the offense any longer as Payne & John have been in together on multiple occasions so can he really do any worse than 1-6 from beyond the arc? Would we not be better off on the defensive end of the court with Neari at 6'1 vs Lickliter who is perhaps 5'9 at best? At the very worst, we would then have two guys from the same AAU team bringing the ball up that have game experience together which I would think couldn't hurt either. If Payne needs a rest, then you bring in the spark plug but if Payne is in the game he should be focused on playing the point and working from the top the key where he is most effective instead of asking him to drop to the wing or baseline where he struggled a bit tonight.

Who knows perhaps Neari might actually know how to feed the post and take a little of the passing pressure off of Cougs :)

That's what i don't understand, lickliter plays brommer, lil lick, hell even bawinkle before neari. Give the guy a shot to play, i am sorry but lil lick took a HUGE step back today. 1-6 shooting when all his shots were WIDE open! Also I was very disappointed in Coles, and Cougill efforts today. Both of them allowed sims to just school them! Cougs looked like a 40yr old fat guy trying to guard a HS post player.

Off the top of my head, I recall Lick having at least two last-second forces with defenders draped all over him.

Don't you think the player's playing time is a result of what they show coach during practice? Since none of us attend practice I don't see how anyone could make an intelligient judgement about who should be playing and who should not.

If you ask Big Lick then this is the answer. If you ask most people that understand the game of basketball, this is a nice PR answer - nothing more, nothing less.

Let me clarify a point if I may. I don't want to see Lil' Lick, Neari or Bawinkel on the floor - EVER. But at some point don't you think that Big Lick is going to step back and say, 'I'm playing my kid too much and he just isn't that good.'?

This team is woefully short on talent and depth. We aren't making a post-season tournament and we need to build towards next year. Every game that is remaining on our schedule needs to be played with that in mind. Lil Lick isn't going to see the floor next year so he shouldn't be seeing significant minutes this year. Reward the kid (Neari) for at least practicing and give him a few token minutes that would otherwise be taken by your son.

lil Lick isn't a D-1 or Big Ten Point Guard either.

Well Lil Lick is a better point and 2 guard than Neari, so hopefully that helps. This is so pathetic that we are even having a conversation about this. Lick has really killed this program.

This is correct. Neari could be far worse than J.Licky. We have no idea and should trust that the coaches are playing the players that give the team the best opportunity to win.

I believe that Coach Lickliter would be happy to never play his son if he had players with enough talent and experience to pass his son on the depth chart. The team just doesn't have the personnel to for this to happen at this time. If John Lickliter is the best person to fill the role of second string point guard he should be in that role. You are crazy if you think that Coach Lickliter is holding back a player that gives the team a better chance to win so that he can play his son.

Get that common sense out of here! This is the internet, and it's serious business.

Like you?

I love John's effort and he does the most he can with his abilities. If Neari isn't playing b/c of his skill set why was he allowed to walk-on? I mean he can't be physically gifted worse then John can he?

What I can't believe is you actually watched that stink-bomb of a game TWICE!

Lickliter is more like 5-7"

The fact that Lil Lick is the only other pg that Iowa has says it all. Obviously Big Lick knows he can't rely on anyone else on the team, other than Lil Lick to be able to get the ball upcourt against any kind of pressure without turning the ball over, including Tucker, if he was available. And this will also be the case next year, if Lick doesn't sign a pg this spring.

For the record, I wasn't talking about Neari filling in for Payne at the point guard as I don't believe he is ready for that from the brief time that I have been able to observe him play. However, I am not sold on the fact that having Payne run at the 2 spot while John runs point is really going to benefit this time in the long run and therefore would much rather see the minutes go to Neari instead of John in this scenario so Payne remains at point. Someone else mentioned how Lick had to throw up 2 forced shots as the clock ran down which furthers my argument in that a taller Neari may have been able to at least attempt a standard jumpshot over his defender or heaven forbid take it to the whole. Additionally, let's not forgot the political side of things for a minute either in that a few minutes here and there for Neari could go a long ways in keeping him happy which potentially helps to keep Payne happy as these are two guys inside the program that most certainly helped Brust decide to commit to Iowa so we could see the trio of them go elsewhere which also pretty much closes the door on at least the one AAU connection Iowa currently has into Chicago.
