Why not bring back the Scottish Highlanders?

The Highlanders decline began when the University withdrew support, and I believe classroom credit for the group. During the late 80s it still had about 40-50 members, but was dwindling fast at that point. I believe the SH may still be around in some form, but just as a voluntary, non-supported group. I will check with some former SH I know to see if they know more info.

I'm too young to remember this being in existence, but I will say nothing gets me going like the pipes and drums. I you tubed this and found it to be surreal. The person responsible for the elimination of this program should be publicly shamed, brought up on criminal charges and run out of town on a rail.

I would like to see the Highlanders perform at Kinnick or the Rose Bowl. They seem to be a major boost to the team and the fans. I believe that they did shows at the Iowa Rose Bowl wins. I would like to see that again. Does anyone in here know why we have not seen tham in a while?

Yeah, because they sucked. You hear one bag pipe song you've heard them all. Had to listen o them in the 70's while we goy our ***** kicked on the field too. Brutal! However, I was a liberal then and the stadium was much more liberal during the games which helped offset some of the misery.

they were terrible, or as the story goes. not a hit and was somewhat symbolic of the losing days of iowa football, and with Fry came changes - and the highlanders budget cut and they gone. Not sure Fry had anything to do with it, but wouldn't be at all surprised given how he changed the losing face of iowa football.

So what people smoked weed in the stadium during the 70s?

Originally they were a small part of some great hawk football seasons. But by the 80s there didnt seem time for them to perform at halftime. The marching band actually played some long halftime shows back then. They started introducing anniversary teams in wrestling, track, football, bball etc.

And now there are introductions of people at halftimes, along with the marching band, plus all the audio visual and music blaring from the sound system.

The slow march of the Highlanders would be good to have once a year at halftime with the alumni band but I dont think there is room for them anymore.

Lame.

I think the combination of Scottish Highlanders and the pink locker rooms would make Kinnick the most fearful place to play at in the Big 10. It would be combining part of the winning formula from both Evy and Fry. I will look further into bringing something back from the great Knipe and Jones teams but I'm not sure right now. I know there was a black bear under the stands of Iowa Field but I don't think people could bear to put up with that any more.

Wasn't unheard of by any stretch...........in the 70's the student section was goal line to the 10 - 15 North of the press box. A lot of partying took place there and in the knothole section next to it.

I think 1980 was the last year they performed in Kinnick. As I recall they had been declining for awhile.

Pipes and drums can be cool in the right setting. If you've ever seen a firefighter's funeral procession with the pipes playing Amazing Grace, it is spine-tingling. But not in a football stadium, you can't hear them for jack.

him saying that the stadium was 'liberal' is no joke. you could bring coolers and beer into the stadium. One season in the early 70s the team didn't score a point, all home season, and perhaps, all year. so coolers, beer...only way to get people into the stadium!

The band could be modernized for a better show. For example amplified bag pipes are available now. Now that would greatly improve the home field advantage.

<<(A)mplified bag pipes are available now>>

Oh, what Spinal Tap could do with a set of those...

Only if we all get black-and-gold earplugs.

"Modernizing the Highlanders" is like "aerobicizing Michael Moore" or "motorizing an eggplant" or "terrorizing Chuck Norris". Some things can't be done.
