Why Iowa won tonight

Look proles, I wasn't gonna post tonight because I didn't want JD to ban me, but I've calmed down.

Anyway, Iowa won because tonight, for the first time in seven years, I actually cared about Iowa basketball in March. Even on that fateful afternoon where Northwestern State sank that last second shot the last time I cared in March, I almost felt it before it came. Hell, the voice of reason that filled my bracket out had Iowa losing in the second round.

But think about tonight:
- We were coming off 22 hours rest
- We were matched up against a very athletic and talented team that has had the benefit of the greasiness of the Heathcote/Izzo regime for decades
- We got jobbed by the officials catering to that Izzo regime (6 fouls in the second half - are you effin' kidding me?)
- Northwestern cheapshotted the hell out of us, White looked hurt and Gesell was banged up
- We have a three point "sharpshooter" who has been anything but this season

And despite all that, we controlled most of that game and were, oh I don't know, a missed no-call on a Basabe dunk and a shot clock violation turned into two points on MSU's end away from winning. We displayed a level of athleticism, depth, fundamental basketball (save for the mistakes of youth) and teamwork that hasn't been in Iowa City in a LONG time. We are young and it showed in the closing minutes.

But what that game gave me is something I haven't had in a really long time. It gave me hope. Not expectations, just hope. With the one and done crap, the superstars like Zeller and Burke have a really short shelf life and I think Fran has found a crew of really good ballplayers, but none who look like dudes who will bail for the NBA. We're never going to land the Jabari Parkers or Anthony Davis's of the world, but in that game this evening, you saw steady contributions from each class of Fran's recruits and that degree of continuity is going to be absolutely essential to this program.

We also won because the level of meltdown on this board is nearing levels of the 2010 Arizona football game - when you hit that level meltdown, you know the fans care. So I know I'm not the only one back in the saddle here. And don't get me wrong, I'm a die hard Hawk fan, but I'm not a masochist, which is why for roughly 15 years I have tried to turn off my care-meter come March. But from what I saw out of this ballclub tonight, we're going to have something to care about in March for as long as we keep Fran around. Not to sound like some doosh Cubs fan, but here's to next year.

It felt like everything that could’ve gone wrong this season did, and we were still that close to making it to the ncaas on a nice little streak. Sux these guys couldn’t get tourney experience, but next year we will be built much better for a tourney run.

MSU is a top 10 team and I never had the feeling that we were lucky to be in a position we were in. We didn't need some lucky bounces or some lights out shooting. We didn't need MSU to play bad or need help from the refs. We can play with a top 10 team without all of that because of how we play as a team and how great our defense has become.

People say the better team won tonight and that might be true. But we are a handful of bad plays, unlucky breaks, and bad calls from being considered the better team. And the way we played them tonight we sure looked like it.

Right now I'm looking for reasons to not just assume we will win the big 10 next year. Right now I can't find any.

development from clemmons, a fully healthy gesell, and more development from woodaseni and this is a 26-win team next year

they lost this game from freshman mistakes and having no one with a reliable jump shot. two shooters will suit up next year, and sapp will run the team better in a closing stretch if he has to, like last night.

Here are some things we can focus on. We tried hard, and we are still close dear friends.

Wow. You are capable of fabulous posts. This was one of this them. Thank you for some great insight. I feel great about Iowa basketball and I am looking forward to the postseason, wherever we end up

I think we get to 26 wins this year...

If by chance the Hawks get to the NCAA tournament they will make a deep run. The officials are not going to allow the mugging that Iowa got in the B1G tourney. Mug State will not go far if the officials actually call fouls. I'm MAD again!

Go Hawkeyes!!!!!!!

I want to hope your right so so much. It will depend on scheduling however. Next yrs Iowa team would have easily had 26 wins this yr. If coach decides to toughen up the schedule (and I think he will cause he'll know his team next yr will be better and there will be pressure for him to do so) it may be problematic on what the final record ends up being. Next years team could win 20-22 overall and have 9-11 wins in conference and still be a way better team than this yrs if they play and lose to some better teams in early non conference. I guess for me I'd like to see them look good on the national stage with a tougher schedule and hopefully get a good seed in the tourny not just squeak in

We won't win the B1G next year - I think OSU is going to be too good and someone else will have a good year as well. But there's no reason we couldn't be in the top 4 or so. I'm surprisingly not bitter right now, though, because we have really closed the talent gap and we are playing like a team. Dare I say it, but I think you have to go back maybe 15 years to see this sort of depth and teamwork. The reassuring aspect is that we play really good defense and we were 2-3 boneheaded offensive possessions in several games away from having a fantastic record. Fran will tighten up that offense and it will improve as we mature, so pardon me for wearing the Hawkeye colored glasses, but I think the future is as bright as it has been in a long time.

Nice post OP.

However, OSU top dog next year. No way. No Thomas. Craft doesn't scare anyone. The rest of the talent is good, but bricklayers.
