Why don't we announce coaches???????

It appears we have lost out on some recruits due to not have position coaches. Why do we always wait so long to fill those roles and then wait more time to "make it official" and name them publicly. Seems like we shoot ourselves in the foot at times. Any good reason we do this??

Why? Take your choice:

- Weak sports information department.
- Old school, risk averse head football coach who doesn't believe recruits need to concern themselves with such things.
- old school, risk averse head football coach and assistants who have little understanding, appreciation for the interwebz, social media.
- University hiring procedures which may delay hirings, announcements until the posting period has expired and the hiring goes through several steps of approval.
- All of the above.

By University rule positions must be posted for 30 days. There is an exemption that allows the posting for 2 weeks which football utilizes. I would hazard a guess KF was hoping the coaches would have new jobs by now. Jobs were posted so they can be announced 2 weeks after that date.

Would you rather have KF and staff focus on recruiting in Jan., or would you want to have him interviewing, and worrying about position coaches? It isn't like if he hired someone Jan 1st, that that coach would have time to establish a relationship with a kid (whom others have recruited for months) and sign them.

You get through recruiting, then you address the position coaches, if you are going to make a move.

Sorry, but any time spent and relationship built with recruits is better than none. What the worst that could happen? Recruit meets new coach and hits it off and signs or doesn't like coach and doesn't sign. Or recruit says I'm not going there, they don't even have a position coach for me.

I would think that he would have time to both recruit and interview coaches.

Your choices are these:

1) Use the coaches that have been in place recruiting the current kids for the past month/months/year, then let them move onto the next job.
2) Let the coaches move on in Dec./Jan, hire good, qualified coaches, hurry up and try to establish new relationships with new coaches and current recruits.

I could be wrong on this, but don't most position coaches stick around until after the signing period, and that is when most of the new coaches are hired? I'm not talking OC or DC, but your WR coaches, or TE coaches, etc.

I would think option 2, you would lose a ton of critical time trying to get these recruits. The job has to be posted for 2 weeks before someone can be hired. It would be a major, major gaffe, and the screaming would be deafening around here if we were down 2 or 3 coaches right now.

I don't understand the OP as the title doesn't match the overall post. The title "Why don't we announce coaches?" However, your actual post summarized wants to know why it takes so long to fill positions. That is actually two different issues.

Wanting to know why it takes so long to announce suggests that someone was hired but KF didn't announce it publicly. Which in turn wouldn't affect recruiting as the recruits would know. Why hide a position coach from their future players? Doesn't make sense. If KF hired someone the recruits would know. But then asking why the position isn't filled yet and believing that it affects recruiting, don't match up.

I understand that people are frustrated, it is annoying but it appears really that Iowa has only lost 1 or 2 POSSIBLE recruits, no one decommitted.

These kids could just be using it as an excuse to cut Iowa from their list, it doesn't mean that Iowa was their top choice or where they would have committed to if only Iowa had hired a position coach but chose to go elsewhere because they didn't have a position coach yet.

Look at it this way, if the kid wanted to know his position coach first, either way, it could go that they didn't like the new hire, already created a closer bond with a different position coach at a different school for a longer period of time. Anything could happen, until Iowa loses committments, I don't see a problem.

The WR kid from PA announced this morning he was going to UConn and mentioned that one of the reasons was not knowing who the WR coach at Iowa was going to be.

For what it's worth I don't buy it, if he loved his visit and liked the coaching staff I don't think it would really matter.

I also think getting the right coach is more important long term than losing one recruit.

Great post Hoffa, why the way where are you buried. People have been looking for you for years.

Because most people don't get very excited about coaches from Plumbers and Steamfitters Tech.
