Why does Iowa suck in the Big Ten Tournament?

There have been 18 Big 10 tournaments (counting this year). Iowa has lost their first game 11 times. They have only made it to Saturday 4 times...the last being in 2006.

This is horrendous. Why is Iowa such a poor tournament team? It is maddening!

The BTT started near the end of the TD era, 1998 I believe was the first one which was his 2nd to last year. From that point until the present, Iowa has been a bad basketball program overall. One Sweet 16 appearance since then and one NCAA win outside of that.

Their BTT tournament performance reflects their overall performance. Inconsistent at best, mind blowing pathetic at worst.

That's exactly right. Other than the last 2 years, they sucked in the tournament because they sucked in general. Last year they fell apart before it started. This year was just a 1 game sample size of what a decent team can do in the tournament. Actually 2 years ago we were a decent team and won so we are 1 for 2. 1 for 3 if you count last year being a good team.

It's all about the NCAAs. The BTT is irrelevant.

Tom Davis' teams played in the first two Big Ten tournaments. In the first year the Hawks were a fifth seed & got blown out by fourth seed & eventual champion Michigan. The next year the Hawks were again a fifth seed & were blown out of the United Center by fourth seed Wisconsin. The Spartans were the champs.

Because it's a single game elimination tournament and most of the time we've played a similar or supirior opponent, another time we were collapsing and playing as bad as anybody and another time we had a flukish bad shooting game.

I think this is going to be an unnecessary narrative for a while.

It's all about winning the BTT & going to the Final Four. Winning first round games is meaningless if you don't go any farther. What do you want? A coach who never loses a first round game or a coach whose teams gets upset in the first round quite frequently. However, the second coach leads several teams to the Final Four & does win it all.

That is the difference between Tom Davis' career & Lute's!
