Why can't we get McNutt and DJK in at the same time?

I've seen this asked a few times but it's never really been answered. I think it's apparaent MCnutt and DJK are our two best receivers this year. Not a knock against Stross, he's healthy, and he has produced, but McNutt is bigger, looks faster, and has flat out made bigger plays. Yes I know DJK has battled the injury bug, and McNutt has also had injury and was sick but...

Are we ever going to see them both out there at the same time? Is there a big difference between the two WR positions in our offense?

I find it hard to believe that our WR's would only know one position. So even though they are listed in the same position on the depth chart, I would think that putting them both in at the same time in multiple receiver sets wouldn't upset the apple cart that much. Maybe that's the way KOK has his offense setup...get the guys into one position so they can concentrate on perfecting their technique. Given the way we substitute freely at the WR position, this might not be as outlandish as I thought...

McNutt had a sprained thumb so he did'nt play much.Stross is doing a good job and when he graduates we might see both of them in there.

I had a dream that not only were McNutt and DJK in the same formation but Davis to. Just who do you double team and who is going to beat you? All three can go over the middle and can make plays down the field.

I have always wondered the same thing. when we go 4 or 5 wide i would even run something with them on the same side of the field.

I like it because we use 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR's) which, if an opposing DC is on his game, usually means the nickel package is going to come in. Weapons like Wegher and Moeaki create mismatch problems against a nickel set. You use your additional CB to cover our 3rd WR. That leaves the defense in a quandary. Let's say you plan on rushing 4, dropping 7 in coverage.

Who's going to cover Moeaki? A LB? You are asking for it if you want a LB to try to stay with Tony. A safety? Sure, he'll stay with him, but if Stanzi is accurate with a throw to him, you might as well move the chains because his big body can shield any safety he's up against.

Who's going to cover Wegher/Robinson? A LB? Strike up the Iowa fight song because we're about to score...way too quick for LB's. A safety? This might be your best bet, but bringing a safety out of the coverage shell just put either of our outside WR's (ahem, 6'3"+ WR's) in 1-on-1 coverage. Stanzi's accuracy might puncture you with the precision of a surgeon's scalpel (see: Arkansas State).

Drop into full zone? Better hope Stanzi makes a mistake...if we're patient, we can dink and dunk our way down the field at will.

LOVE this formation!

This was a post I made on the 5 wide topic that was discussed earlier today. I highlighted the section that pertains to THIS discussion...

I would like Kenny to run one of his old plays that we use to see 3 or 4 times a game. The good old Jail Break screen. I think we have the players to run it as long as Stanzi throws it to the right team. This should get us a nice chunk of yards.

I would like to to see K. Davis get some more time on the field. I know he is behind some good guys but this kid will be one of the best Iowa has ever had once he gets his chance.

I would like to see DJK get a few jailbreak screens to see what he can do in the open field. He doesn't seem to get many opportunities for yards after the catch. The jailbreak was used a little too much in the past but I see no reason not to try one since we only have 5 games left. Most teams will not have scouted that this year.

I like the jail break screen too, but maybe we're saving it for just the right moment. Remember how successful Brodell was against Texas a couple years back? I didn't look like TX was ready for the screen to him at all and he made a couple NFL players look bad. I think DJK (or Sandeman?) could do this in the right moment against tOSU or in a bowl game to break a game open. It would be especiall succesful out of an 11 set with McNutt and Moeaki both on the screen side as lead blockers.

I said earlier on a different thread that DJK, McNutt and Moeaki on the field at the same time has the makings of a dynamic downfield offense. But, like others, not sure what the difference is in the playbook between SE and WR. Judging by this thread the possibilities are obviously enough to make hawk fans salivate, me included.
