Why are we not seeing Derrick Mitchell?

I simply love the skill set of Derrick Mitchell. He reminds me so much of Ronnie Harmon (forget the 4 drops). He is multi-dimensional and is another explosive player. Is he in the doghouse for some reason>

He was on the field a lot in 3rd down situations, and even split out wide on at least one occasion. But because our running game has been so effective, we haven't needed to throw a whole lot, hence his low number of touches.

I actually think that once we hit tougher games, we'll see much more of him, as the playbook opens up more. It's far too early to be worrying, especially considering that we're still running roughshod over people with our offense.

Leshun only had 15 carries and wadley 9 carries against isu. So far Iowa hasn't been pounding the ball constantly like last year when canzeri had 40+ carries in a game. They've been going the balanced route...30 pass plays and 36 rushes.

If leshun and wadley are healthy and fresh they need to be in there

He will get many more carries and touches as the year goes on even if LD and Wadley are healthy.
We haven't had the standard run till the defense rolls over game yet. We might see that this weekend.
I was really happy with how they used DMX on Saturday. I think he needs to run with a lower pad level, it he is deadly catching out of the backfield.

Agree. Minimum 6 touches per game. I hope the coaches are saving him for conf. If not they are wasting his gifts imo.

There are only so many people you can give the ball too in a game.

Primary offensive weapons
LeShun Daniels
Akrum Wadley
Matt VandeBerg
TE's & WR's as blockers and to spread out the defense

Secondary offensive weapons
George Kittle - as a receiver
Riley McCarron
Derrick Mitchell - third down RB
FB's as blockers
Jerminic Smith

Other offensive weapons
Jay Scheel - coming off of a quad injury
C.J. Beathard - as a runner

The rest of the guys are developmental.
True Freshman Toks Akinribade is the designated clock killer for late in blowout games.
If Jonathan Parker gets healthy he might become a factor as the season goes on.

George Kittle is quickly becoming a primary offensive weapon. McCarron & Mitchell are going to get plenty of work. Smith and Scheel are coming along gradually, building confidence.

Using C.J. as a runner has its obvious risks. It was essential to winning last year though.
Iowa is pretty thin at Fullback. They might want to save Drake Kulick so he's available for the big games.

After week one I thought we needed to see a little more DMX. Last week I thought was just about the right amount.

As others have stated if we see more third and longs to third and mediums we probably see more DMX. From that perspective, as a team we should hope to see very little DMX.

There are only so many balls to go around and once again, only about 2 and half quarters of meaningful offensive snaps. I appreciate his skill set, but I personally think Wadley and Daniels are better RB's right now. I do think we'll see more of him directly producing as the season goes on and I think when he gets his opportunity to start next year, he will do well with it.

Less wear and tear on the players in scrub time...allows them to be more healthy when the real season starts...and ends...hopefully with a healthy team. I like rational - resting of essential players.

Well he's been rested. In 2 games - 2 carries and 2 catches according to ESPN. That's ********

So if we never have 3rd and long, or if we have long TD's on every possession, we should play a '5th' qtr. so he can get his 'touches', lol..........LOL.............Our 2 backs are averaging like 8 yds. a touch, but we should bench them becuase you like Mitchell and he should 'touch' the ball 6 times a game, Bahahahaha.......................Come on Ashton, fes up! I'm being punked, aren't I ???? were averaging like 420 yds. a game and like 43 points a game, but your geniuses think there's a problem with our offense and how we're using our personel.....Bahahaha!!!! This stuff is classic!!!

How do you take these 'people' seriously????

Yep he did play a lot more and they were wasted snaps that should have gone to Wadley or Daniels. And everyone knows we are going to pass when he is in there.

I think they have a set of plays for certain situations that they will use him in and they are not going to expose them to the rest of the BIG. He has been in the first two games so it won't telegraph when he will get the ball when he does come in. Not like last year.

Mitchell was split out wide on the second play of the game. The coaches put him out there other times as well. They're trying to get him involved but as others have said, you can only play 11.

BTW, hopefully this thread does not bring back injury woes at this position. We should not speak of having too much running back depth.

"How will we ever get enough touches to Robinson, Wegher, and Hampton?"
