Who's Team

Not too long ago I heard an interview with Fran and he said now this year it was White's team to lead, etc., etc. When I heard that I felt sick. White is a fine player, but he's at best a Scottie Pippen, not a Michael Jordan. Meaning he's not a cold-blooded killer in the clutch, he's just not that guy.

But it got me thinking, if White's not "the guy", then who is, and I could only come up with Gesell. After tonight, I'm sure about it. This team goes as far as Mike Gesell takes us. It's his team. Sure he's not a transformational talent, and in no way can he ever do it all by himself, but he is the key to whether this is a really good team, or just okay.

If this Mike show up night in and night out with that grit and determination........then again he could be the team's Rudock to and play well for stretches and disappear for many more. However, Mike got a big win this year where Rudock has not.

Gesell and Woodbury were unbelievable tonight. Olaseni and Uthoff played with great intensity. Clemmons was great on the defensive end.

What a thrilling victory!

If this is MG's team then it'll be a just okay team. He's not playing against Paige every game. And he's certainly not going to shoot 60% many games.

I've seen more games of Mikey struggling than him coming through in the clutch. The thought of this being his team... still makes me nervous.

Who knows though... maybe this can provide a huge shot of confidence. I'm not sure if it was just the familiarity of playing against Paige or what but he just came out aggressive from the start. He took a couple quick pull ups off the dribble and knocked them down. Shots we really hadn't seen him attempt in the past.

I'm a little more optimistic. I think that while maybe part of this performance was spawned because he was going against a friend and had a little extra juice, that doesn't mean he can't learn a lot about his own game from watching this tape. The pull up game is something we've always known he had and wished he utilized more, rather than shooting threes or trying to finish at the rim. The couple he hit in the first half with guys in his face were just cold-blooded, but the one that really got me excited was the jump stop and turnaround jumper in the lane. If he can continue to utilize that sort of trick, it'll give him more opportunities to actually finish at the rim, too, because the defense will have to respect that turnaround jumper.

It's one game, but the things that got me excited were more in his shot selection, rather than just shooting out of his mind. He played to his strengths and took the types of shots that he's very good at, rather than trying to be something he's not. He won't shoot 60% every night, but if he continues to play this way, he'll be a 40% shooter or better, IMO.
