Who Replaces Mike Meyer?

Just wondering if we have someone in the works here.

While I appreciated him being Mr. Automatic when it came to extra points, by the end of the season, I was ready to see him move on. His miss from 35 yards yesterday was the kicker for me. There had just started to be too much of that, and from distances that a good kicker should not be missing from. His miss was also one of many keys that cost us the Northern Illinois game, the game that, more than any other this season, got my ire up.

Two nice FGs at Minnesota and the game winner against Michigan (into the wind) come to mind, but missed on some "easy" ones. There are schools with a lot worse in that department (and some better), overall, I think he was above average, but not among the elite. I won't expect much different from the next kicker, who I think is Koehn. Very few at the college level have NFL level accuracy, so to expect much more than what Meyer provided is not realistic.

There's a reason that you see the same guys kicking in the NFL all the time. Most guys coming out of college aren't as good as the 40-year olds who've been doing it for 20 years. It'll be a long time (if ever) before we have another Kaeding.

I have no complaints with Meyer. I was disappointed he missed the FG yesterday but I think he deserved another chance in the 4th quarter instead of going for it on 4th down. Even the best place kickers miss field goals every once in a while.

Meyer was a very good college kicker, its rare to get a Nate Kaeding type. I see we recruited a new kicker, don't know much about him but considering we don't keep many on the roster he is likely the future.

Thought Kornbrath was a pretty significant/record holding kicker in HS.. (In WV, granted.. but still)

I think the short answer is that our next kicker is most likely Marshall Koehn. I think he came in and kicked a couple kickoffs/PAT's in the WMU game earlier this year. From second or third hand information, he might have a stronger leg but we probably won't know his accuracy until he gets into a live game with some real pressure.

Meyer was a WALK-ON from Dubuque. He is an Iowa guy! He did his best which was pretty darn good. We'll see who is better in the coming years.

Is Gus available?

I'm thinking either Alden Haffar or Marshall Koehn, both will be Juniors next year. Didn't find much info on Koehn as he's been behind Meyer. Looks like Haffar has a strong leg he set two all time records at Nate Kaeding's kick camp for kickoff distance 82 yards and hang time 4.26 sec. Haffar had the 2nd most KO for touch backs in the nation in 2012 kicking for ICCC.

I would welcome anyone who can make chip shot FGs. That game couldv'e turned out much different if he makes that chip shot in the 2nd half.
