Who would you say is the best NFL player among all the ex-Iowa Hawkeyes currently in the league?

When I thought about this, the answer that leaped to my mind was Minnesota Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway. He hasn’t missed a game in the last five seasons, and averaged 9.6 tackles per game last season. Greenway is a terrific pro player.

The NFL Network is counting down its top 100 NFL players, 10 per week. It has given us Nos. 61 through 100. So far, no ex-Hawkeyes.

Pete Prisco of CBSsports.com gave his top 100 all in one burst. There is just one former Iowa player. He is No. 44 Marshal Yanda, Baltimore Ravens guard.

Offensive linemen never get enough respect. I should have thought of Yanda immediately. The guy was a Pro Bowler last year. He’s good.

So who are the top five former Hawkeyes in the NFL. My criteria would be like Prisco’s and the NFL Network’s. It isn’t based on a body of work, but the here and now. So, tight end Dallas Clark would have been atop or near the top of this list the last several years, but not now.* The same goes for defensive end Aaron Kampman.

I’ll go with (in this order) Yanda, Greenway, New York Jets running back Shonn Greene (1,054 rushing yards last year), Indianapolis linebacker Pat Angerer (148 tackles last year),* and … and … and then it gets difficult.

Defensive tackle Karl Klug had seven sacks in his rookie season for the Tennessee Titans. Defensive end Adrian Clayborn of Tampa Bay forced a pair of fumbles in December, and seems a safe bet to crack the top five soon and stay there a while. Nate Kaeding has been a Pro Bowl performer kicking for San Diego, but missed all but one game last season because of injury.

I’ll go with Green Bay Packers offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga at fifth.

Do I have a glaring omission? Who would be in your top five?

I think you pretty much got it. I think Godfrey has played pretty well for Carolina the last couple of years. Kaeding has to be on the list regardless of last year's injury.
 
Casey W has to be talked about here. That guy has not only brought it, he has lasted. His records are hard to argue with. He is a man amongst boys!!!
 
I know last year wasn't good because of injuries, but Jonathan Babineaux (sp?) has probably been very close to this title for the last 3 years. He appeared on Peter King's all-pro/pro-bowl lists several times. DT's like OL often get overlooked, but Babs has been as good as any Hawkeye over the last 5 years in total production.

I don't know if I would call any recent ex-Hawk "Awesome" right now. Bob had an Awesome year. Nate could be awesome if he didn't screw the pooch in the post season.

Awesome, to me, would indicate future HOF. I don't see any current or recent Hawks there.

Yep good call. Also, Colin Cole has had a pretty good NFL career. Not sure if he is still in the league or not though, I thought he was with Seattle.

Yeah awesome may be to extreme but he is a dang good defensive line player for the Falcons.

I think Kampman was heading towards HOF considerations before Green Bay changed defenses and tried to convert him to a Linebacker. Bob Sanders would have HoF considerations had he been able to play more, but still might with 2 All Pro seasons.

He was not on a NFL roster last season.
 
I think there are a lot of younger guys that have a chance to be the best in the next year or 2. Bulaga and Claiborne being 2 of them.
