A discussion comes up about this every once in a while.
(I guess I should specify football recruiting)
Illinois – I would consider Illinois our biggest competitor for recruits. Iowa is a significant presence in the Chicago market.
Michigan State – They compete for about the same level of recruits in the Great Lakes region. A lot of them are very good recruits, but a level down from what Michigan, Ohio State, and Notre Dame are taking.
Wisconsin – Another presence Chicago and overlapping into eastern Iowa. We occasionally get a recruit directly from the state of Wisconsin.
Nebraska – Do you want to play second string for Nebraska or first string for Iowa? That’s the level the two schools compete for local recruits. The national recruits Nebraska gets don’t consider Iowa.
Iowa State - There isn’t a huge amount of direct competition. Iowa State usually picks up guy’s who don’t fit Iowa’s system. Iowa probably loses some depth to Iowa State.
Missouri – Iowa picks up a certain amount of players from the St. Louis area that might consider Missouri, Illinois, or Nebraska.
Minnesota - They don’t lock up recruiting in their state and it’s a growing market.
Michigan - Very few take Iowa over Michigan even if that player is down in Michigan’s priority list. Iowa steals a recruit every once in a while. Michigan plucks one out of Iowa every once in a while.
Purdue – Competition for a few players in and around Indiana
Indiana – Competition for a player every once in a while.
Texas Tech – That seems to be about the level that Iowa competes in the Texas market. We get one every once in a while out of the Texas market.
Kansas State – Kansas State’s resurgence has blocked what little inroads into the Kansas City market Iowa had. Kansas State being down had more of an effect on Kansas.
------------------------------------------
Above our grade: Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame & to a large degree Nebraska recruit at a much higher level than Iowa. Iowa can offer but can’t compete for recruits with the big boys.
Below our grade: Iowa State, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, directional Michigan schools, smaller Ohio schools, Dakota schools. We pull a few guys away from the small market schools.
Kirk’s old east coast links to the New Jersey, Connecticut, and Maryland markets seem have dried up.
Iowa has a reasonably good hold on instate recruits. Michigan, Nebraska, and Wisconsin pluck a good one out of the state fairly often.
